  1. You just need to add bio-recycling: collect sweat & urine filter it back to your water bottle; collect your poo and turn it into a fuel for your methane stove. That would add to your efficiency.

  2. I've built something very similar to the concept bike myself for riding road ultra events, including bits borrowed from triathlon bikes like an integrated aero front hydration system and rear seat tube aero storage box. Everything is kept narrow and inline so that from the front you cannot actually see the bags, the bike is super efficient and my testing suggests it is possibly aerodynamically faster with everything fitted than without.
The needs of ultra endurance racing are very specific and the aim is efficiency, so low aero drag and low overall weight are important, as is practicality and usability which helps you save time with faffing.

  3. The ads on GCN are getting worse. This video is a 34 minute infomercial, like ITV at 3am. In one segment they were talking about reducing rechargeable kit , in another an electric gizmo for pumping up 4 x 25mm tyres. Four 25mm tyres! Is it 1995? An overpriced chocolate teapot.
Plenty of better content out there without constant product placement – up your game lads

  4. #askgcntech Hey guys, I am just now getting into road-biking, and I just bought an old road bike that hasn't been ridden in a while. I fixed it up, and got it ridable. However, the brakes were pretty bad, they would grab intermittently, or just not really slow me down without really pulling HARD on them. Do old rim brakes go bad after a while? Like drying out? Or is that just how rim brakes are?

  5. Youtube bike communities in a nutshell 'googoogaga new stuff ewww I'll stick with my 1840s steel Farthingale pls way more reliable you're a shitty person for enjoying new tech with inflated price tags'. Bike engineering is expensive, new tech is expensive, do you need them> probs not, might others who have the disposable income find them cool and make their ride more enjoyable and more convenient? very possibly so just stfu especially if you don't understand the difference between ultraendurance and touring, no one is forcing you to buy a non-existent concept bike, let people have their fun

  6. Lazy design. If you have a bike company design lab at your fingertips, you can do more than just bolt/strap a bunch of off-the-shelf parts on it. Try some new frame shapes, integrate racks into the frame, make some bags in new configurations.

  7. I think it’s more of an evolution of the touring bike. I can see some folks thinking that, “Oh, this is the bike industry trying to dictate what bikes we need for different scenarios.” And they would be right, but you don’t have to buy one if you don’t need one. Does it look cool? Hell yes, it does. Do I need one? No. At least now now. But it ticks a lot of boxes for those who do ultra endurance rides. And like Ollie said, lots of good things can come out of concepts even if the bike itself is never made. Great discussion, gents!

  8. Don’t do ultra’s, and don’t necessarily want to – but this thing is sick. Give me sharp bags, tri bars and a small fairing on my commute everyday! Very cool stuff going on here.

  9. Quite like some of the ideas on that concept bike. I’ve wanted a carbon bike with an aluminium rear triangle for years so that I can hang some heavy panniers off the back and still have a lightweight frame.

  10. What I want to know is how close that inner tube was to bursting, please please resume inflating and let us know. It can't have been far off! Conor should hide under the desk, after all he has children.

  11. Besides the integrated lights I'm not sure what is so specialized about that bike. Don't get me wrong, it looks stunning, and the bags flow with the design. However, how is it specialized for epic endurance rides?

  12. The Salsa Cutthroat is purpose built for the Tour Divide, a self supported ultra endurance race across the US from Mexico to Canada on mainly dirt roads and trails, I’m hoping to get one and race the Tour Divide.

Salsa also make the BearGrease which I own, it’s built for winter ultras, or sand/desert. It’s a far tire bike with tons of mounts.

They also have full suspension bikes designed the same way . All of them Maximize the frame triangle size so you can put as big of a bag on as possible

  13. I'd like to see some inventive bike touring set ups for the smaller sized bikes that have no space for the rear saddle packs. XS sized bikes can't run a rear saddle pack

  14. All road is getting to the point where you can do a lot of these races… dynamo is a good add on but not really needed for a race shorter thant a week really. plus part of doing these races is prep… and making all those modifications 😉

  15. Ah come on – Fumpa was doing those pumps for years and it is a recognisable brand and not from China. And Topeak just copies Cycplus pumps in this respect that were winning awards for a few years now. Cycplus has detachable hose for plastic valves and precise pressure setting as well.

  16. Conor, could you bring your old frame pump in, so we can compare with the new Topeak gadget. P.s. I think you should have rehearsed a little with the tyre levels, nothing better than being prepared. 😂
