I didn't know how to cycle at the start of this year. Zero. I've always wanted to though, but there was no opportunity. Then, early this year I went on a date with a guy who cycles and was telling me about the suspension of his bike. I was thinking, wtf is a suspension, but I guess I just nodded. He then got me a used kid's bike (I'm 151cm) to try and learn how to cycle. My first bike ever! I was happy but also scared. It was scary and I was always panicking. I couldn't balance and I wanted to stop every few metres because I wanted my feet to touch the ground. Eventually, I could cycle longer and longer distances until it felt easier and I felt more confident. We started going on trails and it was so fun, I felt accomplished each time I could do a feat I couldn't do before. Even as simple as going downhill, rolling down a rock, or riding through roots made me feel proud. After a while, I got this proper hardtail that was pretty difficult to find as other XS bikes still felt too high for me. It's the end of my first ever season, and damn, I'm so happy how this year turned out and my accidental discovery of mountain biking! I just wanted to learn how to cycle initially, but found mountain biking fun. Winter is almost here, I'm leaving for 2 months and by the time I come back it will be a full-blown snowy winter. For someone who started with zero, I'm proud of how much I've accomplished. I can't wait for winter to end and start cycling again next year and get much better. And that guy has been there every step of the way, coaching me and supporting me.
