I'm still relatively new to cycling so sorry if this is a dumb question.

On my commute to work today I noticed a rythmic sound from my bike I've never heard before, a glance at my back wheel showed it "wobbling" – I instantly got off and checked, it was secure and I didn't see anything obvious with the tyre being off centre etc.

I got to work and a closer look shows the plastic disc connecting the crankset to the wheel isn't perfectly flat and I also spotted some scarring along the side of the tyre – please help with my next steps, thank you.

  1. Can you show a video of the wobbling? LIkely you just need a new tyre. And when you say the plastic disc, do you mean the protective cover of the chainring? Or the chainline? The latter doesn’t need to be perfectly straight

  2. Yeah, the tire is done.

The plastic disk is not necessary though. It helps that the chain can’t get into the spokes if the derailleur is not adjusted correctly, but if it is the “dork disc” is unnecessary and many people just remove it.
