This custom rack has been in daily rain or shine use with no complaints for about a month now on my beloved commuter/adventure/do-all bike! I liked the utility of the trunk but often need more cargo space, so putting the trunk up front seemed like the way to go, freeing up the back rack for big stuff or the milk crate. I'm generally broke, so this was made with all scrap materials I had on hand: Douglas Fir and Red Cedar legs, and an Okume Plywood platform. No metal, no fasteners, so frame mounting points not needed! The lashings have held perfectly, no slippage at all, even on the worst bumpy trails with a heavy load in the frunk. The legs are intentionally pretty springy which allows the suspension to do its job a bit better than if the rack were super stiff.

  1. Super cool, love the laminated wood and the cane creek wheelset. I’m trying to fix up a headshok on a curb picked f400. Usually pretty good with mechanics but the damper system is kicking my but. Sweet ride!

  2. Nice! I’d be worried what it does in a hard-braking situation, where the load moves forward and puts stress on the zip ties, they break, and the whole thing falls on/under the front wheel.

That you have a headshock is handy – I’d seriously look at a third strut that goes into a fender/mudguard mount hole in the fork crown.

    Also, nice bike too !
