In this video, we take you back to a legendary showdown in 1979, when around 1,000 Sunderland Seaburn Casuals arrived at Newcastle Central Station, ready to face off against a waiting mob of Newcastle’s Toon Army. This wasn’t just any match day—it was a high-stakes journey through the heart of Newcastle, with tensions spilling over as the groups clashed on the way to St. James’s Park.
We’ll hear firsthand accounts from two fans who lived through that intense day, sharing the charged atmosphere and personal experiences. One Sunderland fan recalls the adrenaline-fueled walk through enemy territory, as police struggled to keep control. Another Newcastle fan reflects on what it was like to be on the other side of that mob, seeing thousands of Sunderland fans pouring into the city with only one objective: making it to the ground. This video explores the rivalry, the sense of community, and the unmatched excitement of one of the fiercest Northeast derbies in football history.

I was at St James in May 79
A famous day for us brighton fans
We got promoted to the old 1st division
And at Sunderlands expense
Remember all the geordies waiting outside
Shaking our hands wishing us good luck
Always good to hear stories from the smaller firms…as always fair play to all the old boy players…Chelsea were never threatened at either ground and they never brought any to us…1985 Milk Cup Semi Final…enough said
This goon keeps going on about casuals, i never heard that ever back then i went to games home and away back then, we didn't have firms either we just stuck together and looked out for each other,
Boro had a fim in1981 sundland and Sundaland never had a firm years later
😂😂🤷♂️💩
Sunderland only fought in 79 as they had no other option. Newcastle took liberties with them for years. They never brought a mob to Newcastle until C.C.T.V. came in. Never in our ends. Some hard lads but missed the boat in the casual era. They think smashing up york city in the old third division was a scalp ffs.
My god the seagulls in town must have been terrified…S.M.B,S …the seagulls best friend ..😊😊
I think the Makems viewpoint is hilariously overstated. They are only 10 miles down the road and only managed to bring c3000. I found myself near that petrol station and i can confirm he is talking utter 💩 Only Chelsea, and West Ham to a lesser extent, caused us a real problem in the 70s although Man U used to come in numbers but always tried to stay with the escort.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fulwell end 1985, 350 or so of us kicked it off in your main fucking end, you all had the chance to ‘return the gesture’, you were offered tickets but never ever invaded us..!!!
Youve got the numbers and youve got big hitting lads, just not the bottle….!
No chance these days so all those opportunities are lost
Right let's get this sorted…I know we are all getting older and some people are losing it a bit, so let's rely on video evidence…have a look at you tube and Newcastle Vs Chelsea March 10th 1984…see Chelseas 5000 strong army…we had fans in the seats too but that's not shown anywhere…no trouble, good day out, only smack was from a copper with his truncheon….then look at Newcastle Vs Boro March 17th 1984 (1 week later)…shocking turnout and literally empty away terrace… Newcastle Vs Sunderland January 1985 full away terrace almost as good as Chelsea turnout..now let's see if we can find any record of Newcastle fans coming to Chelsea (or anywhere) and causing any trouble…I've searched and can't find much if anything so now I'm gonna look at my granddaughters fairy tale books ..
I was there that aged 21 it’s only time they brought a mob up took us by surprise at bath lane we were into them they had nowhere to go so police moved us on up by the petrol station different gravy we got ourselves sorted got into them they backed off behind police bottles bricks rained down on them after match they got the full treatment coaches and the train lot never stood a chance lol yes we would go down there’s 9-00 looking for it get. In the there bars
The best firm in the North east is Middlesbrough all day long and I'm from the Midlands.
The mags have never lived "Bath Lane" down, it eats them away. Sunderland took the piss all the way from the station to the ground. Everyone knows what happened and no amount of mag spin will ever change the facts. Not many times you can win away 1-4 and still get a better result off the pitch.
Nice to see the Makems in League Championship! Toon Army supporter in the States!
i was only 9 at the time and season ticket with me da ,rember chaos all over.| dont thlnk there was ever a winner more a fuckin good tear up you could kick fuck out ya workmate and be best mate on monday. As far as chelsea comment you need 2 take ya head from ya arse and live in reallity, typlcal cockney your proper boys where some good blokes hard as hell but got respect by given respect didnt need to brag
What a load of Bollocks sad Mackem Badtards total fantasy 😂😂😂
Another Mackem tosser
Forest took 12,000 in the F A cup the one that got replayed after the maggots ran on the pitch . Just watch the youtube footage running towards the forest on the pitch then stop the forest lads where going no where 50/50 at that match and out side but forest ran the show at both replays at goodison
All
These keyboard warriors are all out in force on YouTube 😂😂 how embarrassing, I bet most of yous couldn’t fight sleep never mind fighting someone, must of been one big sleep over watching green street
what a load ov shit i was there makems on there toes again
