Sadly I do not get along with contact lenses very well, so I need to wear prescription glasses while cycling.

For the past 4 years I've used Swiss Eye Gardosa Re+ glasses with clip-on inserts.

In warm and good weather they work fine, no issues whatsoever.

But sadly, as soon as it rains or becomes cold, they fog up extremely quickly. So I can't ever ride when it rains or in late autumn / winter.

And this problem is slowly but surely ruining cycling for me. Every time it rains I have to be afraid I might not be able to cycle home safely anymore.

1) Does this fogging happen with all the glasses, that have the prescription inserts or are e.g. the RudyProject ones better?

2) Are there better solutions where the presciption is integrated directly into the main glass? Is anyone using those?

  1. I’ve got prescription riding glasses that I ordered directly from Oakley and have had no issues with – I’ve worn them through all New England seasons and conditions. I have a complex enough progressive prescription that glasses with discrete individual lenses that are fabricated with the corrections are my best option.

With my next pair I’ll probably splurge extra and get photochromic lenses – right now I’m riding without the vision correction in lower light.

  2. The only time I have a fogging issue with my Rudy Projects Cutlines with inserts is when it is really misty/foggy. I have had similar issues with other glasses without inserts. However once it gets between the glasses and the insert, it is a pain to clear.

That said I live in Perth Western Australia and it does not get that cold, rarely getting below 5C/41F in winter. So cold not an issue and while I ride and race in the rain, I don’t seem to be affected by fogging in the rain.

If I was having a fogging problem, I would just switch back to my old glasses a which is custom multifocals lenses by Goggleman in a Tifosi frame. Other than not looking stylish, they are very heavy.

Prior to the Googgleman pair, I have Oakley with single vision lenses. Other than being very expensive and the lenses scratched easily. When I needed to replace them, Oakley did not offer multifocal lenses.

To answer your questions. Fogging can occur in all glasses, it is harder to clear once moisture gets between the insert and glasses. The alternative to inserts are multifocal inserts bonded to the glasses – Oakley or full prescription glasses (multifocal options are limited)

  3. Various_Tale_974 on

Tifiosi has anti fog coating, mine have progressive lenses, they can fog up when I stop moving for a bit but clear up immediately when back moving. Try the rain-x.

  4. Dunno if they are helpful or if I’m just lucky but I use Carl Zeiss anti-fog wipes to clean my glasses. Cheap on Amazon
