Tire Help Please!

Hi folks! Preparing for an upcoming tour in South America and looking at the latest version of the Schwalbe Mondial tire in a 2.9 x 2.25. It comes in two different versions, RaceGuard and V-Guard, the latter being more heavy duty. On Schwalbe‘s website it indicates that the V-Guard version is classed as an e-bike tire.

My feeling is to go with the heavier, V-Guard version, as this is the beefier of the two with added flat protection. I’ll be riding a Surly Ogre on a mixture of road, gravel, and some trails. I would imagine that some of the roads I’m riding are going to get pretty rough so it seems natural to go with the heaviest possible version of this tire.

Surely, this tire works great on any bike and it’s simply classed as an e-bike tire because of how stout it is and thus it meets e-bike tire specifications? I’m assuming the RaceGuard version is for folks who want a lighter and less beefy version of this tire, but for world touring purposes that the V-Guard is what I want to go with.

—But could it be that the Vanguard/E-Bike version is really far more rigid in the sidewalls and thus geared for E bikes and not my type of riding?? Anyone have experience with this tire or in this area and can comment? Thanks in advance!

  1. I’ve toured and bikepacked through three sets of these. The v guard ones have not only amazing flat protection, but the sidewalls are ultra strong. They’re listed at 35-75 psi and I’ve run them as low as 25 without pinch flats and the grippiness of the rubber is excellent. I don’t want to tour on anything else. I have a set of race guards for my around town bike.

  2. Your instinct is right, the ebike rated tires are typically just more durable and beefier. A good choice for touring for those reasons.
