Bears are a staple of the Whistler Bike Park. They’re so common, that if you visit, it would be weird if you DIDN’T see one. But they’re not as tame and gentle as they seem…

    1. I used to live up on blackcomb fist station level working as a snowboard instructor. I remember bears would come to our apartment buildings because some idiots would throw food out of the window. There is a rule a garbage bear is a dead bear..you can get fined 10k or prison even…one day a ski instructor lost one of her children 🤦🏻 the child ended up in a bear den that was luckily empty but mama bear was roaming nearby…she was so lucky…took half a day to find and rescue the child…

    2. i mean the first rule for handling bears is to stay quite and still so riding past shouting at it is pretty dumb. give it some bloody space next time. remember you are visiting its home and not the other way around.

    3. I'm a 3rd generation Vancouver Islander. Worked in the bush all my life and I have one piece of advice. Don't f*ck with bears or you might have your scalp chewed right off your head!!! Here's the thing it might be only one in ten thousand encounters but when a bear dislikes someone 10 men won't stop that bear from killing the person it hates. It happened in Renfrew a number of years back, Fort Liard, and at one of the camps outside McMurray. They tried everything to stop the bear in McMurray from hitting it with shovels to throwing heavy drill bits at it and nothing stopped the bear. I personally love bears and have had many encounters with them but I do not mess around with them. Best place to spot bears is between Prince George and McBride!!!

    4. The real reason there are so many bears is because they built the village on the site that was the garbage dump.
For years bears would hang around the dump even after they moved the dump farther down the Highway.
There will always be bears around Whistler BC.

    5. Then you come to California where there are many bear attacks … 112 fatal bear attacks in California, and in Canada only 70 fatal bear attacks in 2021

    6. It’s filled with bears cause Canada is strict on dealing with bears as a nuisance, you can’t carry a gun in these dangerous areas and since it’s the bears stomping grounds, what the hell do think would happen… it’s why I don’t camp or recreate in Canada, if I can’t carry a gun to defend myself from a Apex predators, I have no interest in being food for bears

    7. This bear approached me, and he had a green hat and tie on. He seemed smarter than the average bear. Then this baby bear tried to open up my pic-a-nic basket that I had brought to Jellystone Park, and I realised what a boo boo that was!

    8. I have bears in my area, I bike too. If your biking just fly by and dont go slow like you just did. Especially dont do that with a mama with Cubs. Fly by and keep your distance. You slowing down and stopping on your bike makes you look like a predator to them.

    9. I was cycling in Jasper around 25 yrs ago with a buddy. We were coming down some singletrack and there was a switchback ahead. Heavy woods, blind corner. My friend is just in front of me and took the corner fairly quick. The next thing I hear is a scream and a crash as I come around the corner and my friend is sitting on his ass and past him I just caught a glimpse of a bear running off.

Tuns out my friend ran right into the poor thing. Luckily it seemed that no one, human nor ursa was hurt.

    10. I was here June this year and saw three of them in 1,5 hours. Sad thing was that on top of Whistler Mountain one bear showed up just meters away from us at the restaurant and only had eye for the trash bins.

    11. Good examples of him and his wife getting WAY TOO CLOSE to bears for no reason. Don't be this guy, walking past that one when he could have gone around was extremely stupid. Don't desensitize bears to humans, its bad for both parties. Most people wouldn't risk walking that close to a stray dog on the street so why do it with a wild animal?

    12. my country Croatia have big population of Brown Bear, especially in Velebit mountain area where I like to ride a bike…so far didn`t came across bear but legend say bear will retreat into the woods if he hear your voice od noise you make,…
