With a trend for wide tyres on gravel bikes I was keen to see what the new Vielo V+1 Race Edition with 50mm tyres was like to ride on my local trails. The results were illuminating…

  1. So its a drop-bar MTB for the most part. "Gravel" seems to be splitting into two camps – bikes optimized for riding on gravel ROADS vs bikes optimized for the stuff folks used to ride XC MTB's on. I get it…I had drop bars on my MTB back-in-the-day and still have a 26" wheeled, V-braked, front-suspended one with 50 mm tires that gets ridden now and then along with my "real" gravel bike that has 38 mm slick tires and gets used mainly on paved roads. I love fat tires!!!

  2. Nice clean look, refreshing to see a frame without all the holes and plugs. Frame Designers need to catch a wake up! These guys got it right. I’m impressed by how stable it was, looked like you had it under control and not the other way around.

  3. I can see your argument, but honestly, with mtb sales tanking, I feel like if sanity returned to bike companies, most people would be more comfortable with updated 1990’s-2000 mtb flat bar bikes. I have so many friends that are intrigued by my gravel bike, but the moment they hop on for a test spin they’re off balance with having to reach so much for the drop bar hoods.

Also, wider tires seem to make stronger the case for 650b wheels.

  4. If you ride a bunch of rough stuff then maybe the wide tires makes sense. I have 45's on my Grail right now, but I like the feel of 40's better. We have a lot of dirt roads where I live so I mostly ride Gucci gravel. It's more like a road.

  5. I ran Panracer X1 45mm at 18 psi on Zipp 303 Firecrest last weekend at the Graean Cymru UCI World Series race. Wider is the definitely the way to go. Not speed penalty and awesome on the fast descents. Just go flat out with total confidence. So much better than the 40mm tyres I use to run.

  6. Recently went from 40mm to 45mm and the difference was barely noticeable in speed, but the comfort gained was very noticeable. Would try 50mm but they won’t fit in the back.
