This criticism is informed by The Crow Design Manual for Bicycle Traffic (Netherlands) and the LTN 1/20 (UK).
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cycle-infrastructure-design-ltn-120
Both documents point out that bicycle infrastructure should prioritise speed and reduce waits for cyclists. This is because cycling is a physical activity where multiple start/stops cause unnecessary fatigue and discourage people from taking up cycling.
The cycle path in this video goes against the recommendations in both documents by stopping at the side road. It prioritises motor vehicles over people on bicycles. It also sends a message that people on bicycles are inferior to drivers of motor vehicles.
This bad design practice of ‘giving way to side roads’ is normal throughout the city of Leicester.
Cycle paths should be as continuous as possible.
