Neil Treacy is joined by Jonny Holland on the first of two RTÉ Rugby podcasts this week, as we begin previewing Ireland’s Friday night lights showdown with New Zealand at Aviva Stadium.
We look at a busy month ahead for Ireland, as Caelan Doris (8:04) takes over as captain for Andy Farrell.
Jonny breaks down England’s poor dropgoal set-up as they looked to snatch a dramatic win against the All Blacks on Saturday (12:45), while analysing New Zealand’s attacking strategy the 24-22 win. (17:10).
We also look at whether or not the All Blacks will change their strategy if Damian McKenzie starts at out-half as expected, with Beauden Barrett injured (21:55).
We look at the breakout player of the season in New Zealand – Wallace Sititi (29:40), and we also discuss some of the selection calls facing Andy Farrell this week and across the month. (32:00).

George Ford missed the penalty because of pressure. Both Jordie Barrett and Ritchie missed kicks in the RWC. That’s what pressure does.
Jonny Sexton missed a sitter against the ABs in 2013 which would have put Ireland 2 scores ahead, pressure.
Irish runners in attack will confuse nz and draw the same penalties England got
N Z have a better place kicker ?
Should be a cracker if We Halve the penalty count & ball handling is smooth we will be in with a show Ireland are very good & looking for revenge Go The Mighty ALL BLACKs
The goat is pollard, cometh the hour, he always steps up…
Ireland going in having no game but NZ have played twice . I think that will cost Ireland last 10 mins and NZ by a score
Breakthrough player Scha Feinberg…won twice against all blacks…
Don't sleep on Aamua, he is a wrecking ball waiting to be unleashed
Ireland should win but the AB's won't be a pushover, another nerve-shredding, squeaky game
The Irish are deeply cocky and obnoxious. Don't like Ireland at all, and I hope NZ beat them. But I am expecting Ireland to win.
But the Irish are cocky and deeply obnoxious.
And NZ are sitting 3rd. Just this underestimation from the Irish in specific. Just arrogance and ignorance.
Marcus Smith should have stayed on for that kick…..
The other very exciting thing about the Ire v NZ game is that the @raeburnshield is on the line.
We learned Ford is useless
Irish fan here – I think NZ will just sneak it. Game time under the belt and some classy runners – Tele'a could skin us on the wings. Hopefully I am wrong.
Massive game – 🥝 by 5 over 🍀
The Ireland team is the Leinster team. They will be ready. Ireland by 6.
Hansen is definitely ahead of Nash in the pecking order
“Your players have to get up for the New Zealand game, there's no two ways about it. There has to be fear in the back of your mind there that they will explode into action at some stage, and all the stuff they're trying and maybe not pulling off at the moment, it's going to click, and don't be the team that it clicks against.”
This is true. I feel the click is coming.
I've been an All Black supporter for 55 yrs. We have the utmost respect for Ireland. They are an absolute force to be reckoned with. Ireland rugby is consistently excellent. The All Black team is ready because they've had 2 hit outs including a massive one at Twickenham. Ireland is a step up from England in my opinion. These days we don't expect to win but we know we can win. I love Irish rugby and love to see them succeed. I'm looking forward to two World Class teams going at it in front of an amazing Irish crowd. Biggest game on the planet this week. Much love to Ireland from NZ.
Sa are ahead but what ive seen against the pommies .the aoetearas are pretty poor. .0the irish will batter the kiwis..no contest
Poor kiwis😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
England fan expecting an Irish win. Not a lot between the teams so home advantage should be the key. Did feel like England that Ireland should off played a warm up game.
Nz point of view we’ve been waiting over 100 years for Ireland to come to the big boy table finally but don’t get it twisted All Blacks vs South Africa are the biggest game no matter what’s on the line JS
Im thinking the All Blacks are for me the favorites for this match 😮. They have been playing together, they may have played their bad game, and they do create a lot of opportunities. If they play with discipline and dont drop ball they could do this and well. But Ireland are a very very good side
Beware, that wasn't All Blacks (A) team against England
amazing to think englands defence is good? the all blacks scored 3 tries. The all blacks defence is no good? england only got one opportunistic try. Remove the ill discipline and the abs won by a land slide. But alas that was not how the game went. If abs click they take ireland easy, if they dont they lose, its close at the top.
Why do NH pundits talk about "individual brilliance" as if it's a bad thing. Or a "yes, but" thing implying a try score downgrade. Very weird take.
Randall could do with watching Murray's pass to Sexton in Paris 2018. That's how you set up a drop goal for your fly half
As an Ireland fan pains me to say it but we could beat All Blacks by 50 points on Friday night + what would it matter / they beat us in the only two games of real consequence in recent years, namely RWC QFs in 2019 + 2023. That's the reality + FFS spare me the "we only lost by 4 points" narrative as if some kind of badge of honour. Could have been 4 points or 40 points – we lost, again.
Some Kiwis saying the Irish have replaced the Springboks as the All Blacks' main opposition is nice, but a load of bollocks! Irish rugby has a long history, but it is still new at the top levels. As the saying goes, "one night in a teepee doesn't make you an Indian." As much as one can respect Ireland's recent success, they must knock over the All Blacks consistently for another century to truly replace the Springboks! Our battles with Boks are beyond legend. My favourite rugby team of all time is the 1965 Springboks! It is so traumatising that it doesn't even make sense. Kiwis supporting the Boks and vice versa is confusing; it's the classic love-hate thing. Some Kiwis even name their kids after their favourite Springbok players – like current ABs15 captain Du Plessis Kirifi! As exciting as this weekend’s match is against a tough Irish team, smashing the Springboks will always be our top achievement!
What did we learn from the All Black and England game. The referee can be manipulated and this All Black team is still rebuilding with a shorage of x factor players, not the same quality of 20 years ago.
🪴🇳🇿 🤝 🇮🇪🍀
It's going to be a banger. Whoever wins, I just hope there are no more serious injuries. No more concussions.
In fairness that pass to George ford was awful for. Randal and he gets scapegoated.
3rd why are you still banging on about the aura? Nobody in the South ever talks about it. Sounds to me like Ireland are waking up from a 100 yr submissive fantasy and blaming the dominatrix! There was only the aura that you and other northern teams bestowed on them
If the aura is gone it's not because the AB's lost it's because you've finally grown out of your self imposed inferiority complex. Hallelujah! Ireland favourites for this and deservedly so. Bring it on and may the best team win!
Thanks for that great technical run through of that drop goal play. That being said with the scrum going backwards and that an defence coming hard and pushing them back would there ever have been a good spot for a drop goal? Great podcast too! Setiti played most of his school boy rugby at center.
If the ABs can eliminate silly penalties, they are odds on favourites.
My biggest concern is that Ireland is coming into this game cold, I would have liked it better if NZ were our third match of this series. Let’s see.
can't pick the winner from this one, haven't been able to for the last few years tbh, and i'm a hard AB's supporter . .but one thing will be sure it will be hard fought , and the winner will be deservedly so . .c'mon the AB's!
This bullshit is what happened at RWC all talk wait for the game them talk
Don't make a mistake and think they(NZ) are there for the taking…
England should have won 2 of the matches but threw away the points available to win: Smith and Ford lack aptitude under pressure.
In the UK all people speak English, even the Irish and Scots are shy to speak their mother tongue in public, just like Russian was imposed in the Soviet Union.F.NORTHBERG
