The city was one of the three seats of the Prussian regional assembly, and after 1526 the seat of the general regional assembly. In 1655, Grudziądz was occupied by the Swedes, who fortified the castle. After 1772, the city was incorporated into the Prussian state. King Frederick the Great began building a fortress in 1775. The war that broke out on September 1, 1939, reduced Grudziądz to ruin. The destruction in our city was estimated at 60 percent. The scale of the losses was so enormous because the fighting for the city lasted six weeks and was fierce. Tenement houses were destroyed, as well as the monuments of Grudziądz.
