“A World in Danger” Biodiversity and conservation of Italian freshwater fish species (PART TWO)
Fish in Italy are diversified into 621 species, of which 72 were introduced or migrated from the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea due to the tropicalization of the Mediterranean Sea.
Of all the species present, about a fifth live in fresh water and of these 9 are endemic.
The Italian freshwater ichthyofauna is of very high ichthyological interest due to the high number of endemic species, the complex speciation mechanisms that have occurred here and can be studied in vivo and, finally, due to the exceptional biogeographic interest that many populations have.
Essentially, Italy can be divided into two large provinces, namely the Po Valley province (corresponding roughly to the Po Valley, but also extending to the rivers not tributary to the Po such as Adige, Brenta, Piave, Tagliamento) and the Tuscan-Lazio province (corresponding to the middle and upper Tyrrhenian side of the Peninsula, from the Magra River to the Volturno River in the south).
These two regions are home to totally different species and, above all, endemic species.
The Italian fish fauna includes numerous endemic species.
Throughout the 20th century, numerous species of non-native fish from all over the world (especially from North America and Eastern Europe) were introduced into Italian inland waters, both for food purposes and (mainly) for sport fishing.
This revolution has often had disastrous results, in fact species incompatible with pre-existing populations have been introduced, causing local extinctions of rare species and a trivialization of river and lake populations.
