Describing this as the world’s greatest day ride might seem like a bold claim, but on a splendid day, few places globally can match the magnificence of this 150km route. What more could one ask for in a perfect day ride? Epic mountain roads, crystalline rivers, glacier-fed lakes, valleys steeped in mystique, a thrilling hike-and-bike segment, a leisurely fjord cruise along the most renowned fjord on the planet, and culminating with Norway’s premier 1500m ascent. The world’s highest fjord road offers unparalleled views of the region and inland sea below. Undoubtedly, this was one of the most extraordinary days of cycling I’ve ever experienced

  1. Are you certain there's no wetland/marsh along the road?
Remember, not all our marshes are flat. (The one on the hike up to the Troll Church, north of Molde, is at 35 – 40 degrees slope)

At 8:50 you rode over 'Knuten' (The Knot), from 1882, one of our first 'traffic machines'. The short loop turned the road from a massive pain for horsedrawn carriages to doable. The engineers who created it got a Gold Medal for it at the 1900 World fair in Paris.

  2. We walked the old road over Flofjellet this summer (start/stop Vollset). I found it in the "Stikk ut!!" app. In the app it looked like the road would stop at some point, so we just walked. We made it to Skihytta/Ångelsvatnet before we figured out we had walked too far. But we had no regrets. If we followed the app we would have missed the best parts of the trip.

I recommend checking out "Den Trondhjemske Postvei" between Hellesylt and Stranda. They fixed the road recently so the gravel road is in superb condition.

  3. during my FjordNorway Tour this summer I spent 2 nights in Grotli Hotel. What a building. Oh and they have a Sauna to use for free. You just have to ask.

  4. My eldest son, brother, sister-in-law and me did this route 12-13 September this year, but clockwise and over two days. Proper cycle tourists 😂. It is a truly awesome route. Maybe we’ll do it the other way around next time. Our son lives in Ålesund, so lots of excuses to visit Norway, the biggest empty playground in the world. I called it “Dan’s route of awesomeness”, ‘cos it was on my son’s wish list and it really is!
Keep ‘em coming Matthew, love the videos and the web site.

  5. Fun to see you biked the secret passage. We did this short trip from Hellesylt to Flo and back a couple years ago. Sat on a hilltop above Flo in the sunshine and feasted on the best strawberries ever. What a view!! The narrow trail down was a bit horrifying, though, considering the cliffs dropping off to the side. .

  6. Great film!! I live not tooo far from there and have ridden all those roads. Think I still have a mom over tye old post road over Flofjellet. But where is that “secret passage? I e never seen that tunnel and now it’s driving me nuts trying to figure it out!! 🤔

  7. Just spectacular!!! Done all the roads, but not all in one ride. One tip; If you do this ride on a gravel bike, it is possible to ride 15km more gravel. Following the old road from Langvatnet to Grotli, but not advised to do it on a road bike due to sections with loose gravel and sand.
