From Gamla Stan to Kungsholmen: is a walk that takes you through some of Stockholm’s most picturesque and lively areas, exploring Stockholm Like a Local, blending history, culture, and the city’s everyday charm. As you stroll through these neighborhoods, you’ll experience the contrast between the old and new, all while soaking in the beauty of the Swedish capital.
1. Starting in Gamla Stan – Stockholm’s Old Town
Your journey begins in Gamla Stan, the heart of historic Stockholm. With its narrow, cobblestone streets and medieval buildings, the old town exudes charm and character. As you walk, you’ll pass colorful facades in hues of mustard yellow, ochre, and burnt orange. The Stortorget Square, with its iconic row of colorful houses, is a perfect starting point. Take in the sight of Stockholm Palace and wander past Storkyrkan, the city’s grand cathedral.
You’ll notice small boutiques, quaint cafés, and artisan shops along the way, making it a delightful area to meander through. Locals enjoy these streets, too, as they often avoid the more touristy spots and stick to hidden corners, like the quiet lanes around Tyska Kyrkan.
2. Crossing Riddarholmen – Views of the Water
Leaving Gamla Stan, head toward Riddarholmen, an island adjacent to the old town, known for its beautiful views of the water and the striking Riddarholmen Church. This church is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, and the island offers panoramic views of Lake Mälaren and Stockholm City Hall. The wide-open spaces and calm surroundings make it feel like a peaceful escape from the bustling streets of Gamla Stan.
As you cross the Riddarholmen Bridge, the view of Stockholm’s waterfront, dotted with boats, creates a postcard-perfect scene.
3. City Hall – Stockholm’s Iconic Landmark
Continue your walk across the bridge towards Kungsholmen, but make sure to stop at Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset), one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Its distinctive brick tower and golden spire stand proudly along the waterfront. You can admire the architecture from outside or take a tour of the building, which is famous for hosting the annual Nobel Prize banquet.
From City Hall, the view across the water to Södermalm, Gamla Stan, and Norrmalm is spectacular, especially if you’re here in the late afternoon when the setting sun casts a warm glow over the city.
4. Exploring Norr Mälarstrand – Scenic Waterfront Walk
Once you’ve passed City Hall, head to Norr Mälarstrand, a scenic promenade along the waterfront of Kungsholmen. This path is popular with locals who come here to jog, walk their dogs, or simply enjoy the view. As you stroll along the tree-lined boulevard, you’ll notice the calm waters of Riddarfjärden to one side and beautiful 19th-century buildings to the other.
The promenade is especially vibrant during the autumn when the trees are ablaze with shades of red, orange, and gold. Along the way, you can spot locals relaxing on benches, enjoying a fika break by the water.
5. Relaxing in Rålambshovsparken
Further along Norr Mälarstrand, you’ll arrive at Rålambshovsparken, one of Kungsholmen’s largest parks. This expansive green space is a favorite among locals, who come here for picnics, outdoor yoga, or just to unwind. The park offers great views of the city and is an ideal spot to pause, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
During the warmer months, the park buzzes with activity, while in the cooler months, it provides a peaceful retreat. If you’re visiting during autumn, the vibrant foliage adds an extra layer of beauty to the scene.
6. Kungsholmen – A Residential Haven
Kungsholmen has a more laid-back, residential vibe compared to Gamla Stan’s historic charm. As you continue your walk deeper into the district, you’ll encounter locals going about their daily routines-heading to work, meeting friends in cafés, or cycling through the streets. St. Eriksgatan is one of the main arteries of Kungsholmen, filled with cozy restaurants, shops, and bakeries.
7. Fika at a Local Café
No Stockholm walk would be complete without a fika break. Along Fleminggatan or near Fridhemsplan, you’ll find a number of cozy cafés where you can stop for a coffee and a freshly baked cinnamon bun. Places like Petite France or Mellqvist Kaffebar are popular with locals, providing a relaxed atmosphere and delicious pastries.
8. Ending at Västerbron – Iconic Bridge
To complete your journey, head towards Västerbron, the iconic bridge that connects Kungsholmen to Södermalm. This bridge offers some of the best panoramic views of Stockholm, and walking across it is a memorable experience, especially at sunset. You can see the sprawling city, the shimmering waters of Lake Mälaren, and the islands that make up this beautiful archipelago.
