A must for those who enjoy a good bike ride and want to get closer to the beautiful Nordic countryside.
Starting the experience with a ride on the lovely Flåm railway up to Myrdal station, you can see why this is regarded as “one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world”. The train makes a few stops during its ascent, the most spectacular of these being the magnificent Kjosfossen (waterfall), with its slightly eerie “huldra” performance. Wear a raincoat – it gets very wet! Reaching Myrdal station at the end of the line, the train returns to Flåm after a short pause.
About 1/2-way down, we alighted the train at Berekvam Station, where we were met by a veritable collection of mountain bikes. The station has good toilet facilities, although expect to queue – there’s only one!
This is a very easy ride, mostly downhill with only one very short upwards climb. Full of stunning scenery, the expert guides set a leisurely pace, so there’s plenty of opportunity to stop & take photos. Despite the grey cloud & some patchy drizzle, it was thoroughly enjoyable and is strongly recommended. I would definitely do this again when we’re next cruising the fjords!
