The Magyars have always fascinated me, especially after their settlement of the Carpathian basin post 895 to 905. Their raids over the next 55 years reached as far as the Pyrenees and were successful enough that the Byzantine Empire and several other kingdoms chose to pay off the Magyars to gain relief from invasion. Their raids were finally brought to an end in 955 at the Battle of Augsburg when King Otto I of Germany defeated the Magyars.

    1. Árpád was certainly the Kabar Prince Kurszán, and therefore Kurszán and his successors had the title of gyula, the second highest title in the tribal federation.

    2. is it not impossible that arrows flying high and falling vertically prove any sort of danger? the danger from an arrow comes from the man pulling the drawstring back, magnifying the force.

an arrow launched high into the air will lose all that force going upwards, will lose acceleration and simply fall to the earth at the rate of gravity, which is far far weaker than the strength of a man pulling back on a bow string.

you could easily shield yourself from arrows fired high into the air with anything. i'm sure even a thick set of blankets would stop them.

    3. I'm Hungarian. You need to understand the absolute ambivalent mentality of my people. This is a quick guide:

      1. We were defeated by: The Holy Roman Empire (Otto), the Tatars, the Ottomans, the Habsburgs in the XVIII. and XIX. centuries, in WWI and in WWII; we were subjugated by the Ottomans, the Habsburgs, and the Soviets. This is not a complete list. So yeah, you might find it, that we are pretty depressed people. All the losses. All the suffering. And some of them are permament of course.
      But…
      2. On the other hand, and this is a common secret among us: you foreign people do realise, that after all these defeats, we are still here, and still kicking? How dense of a people can be, if you cannot destroy them with the strongest empire of that particular era? You might defeat us, yes. Step in the line, have a cookie and enjoy your victory. We will outlive you, your grandchildren, your empire, and one day, you will find the very same people you thought killed, on the opposite side of the negotiating table. We Hungarians are dense. I am proud to be Hungarian.

If another Hungarian starts to rant about how bad it is to be Hungarian novadays, please refer to section point 1. of my comment. Thank you. Have a nice day.

    4. The Holy Roman Empire may have standed for more than 800 years, but Hungary still stands today. 🙂
BTW, the defeat at Lechfeld did not end the Hungarian raids, just diverted those to South-Europe. There the raids still continued for another 40 or so years, before the Hungarians finally settled and converted to Christianity.

    5. Can't wait in the next video that there are some unfinished episodes such as:

      Rise of Caesar Augustus #6
      Prince Eugene of Savoy #5
      Hannibal #20
      The Anarchy #4

    6. I always prefer new content but i will always have a love for these long videos as well. <3 finding the next part in some series is a time consuming process sometimes. Thank you sir for your amazing history lessons!

    7. It’s amazing how slow to learn the lesson of the need for speed the Europeans often were and how stupid many Western European military leaders were. And, generally across history, it’s utterly crazy how many military leaders allowed themselves to be easily ambushed and wiped out without even having a chance to fight.

    8. How many times did the Germans need to have their armies killed while still sleeping in their tents and lured into chasing light calvary to learn their lesson? Beyond count I guess.

    9. There was no "Serbia" back then. There Wes small duchy of Rashka in nowadays southern Serbia. The name Serbia appeared in the 13th century, after Serbs conquered northern Greece and the town of Thessaloniki.

    10. It's pretty clear the degree of disconnect between Western Europe and Rome in this period. The complete unfamiliarity of East Francian and Italian military leaders with Horse archers demonstrates, for example, the they weren't familiar with Crassus' defeat at Carrhae, for example.
