Bike computers have come a long way in recent years, but, when it comes to power, functionality, flexibility, and so on, they’re still no match for the smartphones most of us have in our pockets… So why do we bother with them?

If you are going to use your phone then you’ll need a good mount. Simon has been looking at the new stem cap mount from Quadlock.

  1. Because smartphones are expensive. You answered your own question. For the price of a phone replacement charge, you get a dedicated device that should be more robust and functional than your phone. (Should be).

  2. Quadlock bar clamp mount + under mount gopro attachment + gopro light adapter of your choosing. Can't get better than that. All in for maybe 100 bucks total. It's really all you need as an enthusiast, phone/music/GPS recording/live maps plus a sleek undermount light that is stable and doesn't take up any space on the bars.

  3. Most people have MANY phones lying around. These were tossed aside for NEW upgrades or versions, or broken screens, etc.
These are not their daily-driven gadgets. So it's ample safe to use as a unit complement.
Screens are much larger and more detailed, a boon for the optically challenged.
As for the added over-bearing weight . . . shut up and ride!

  4. who wants to get their phone broke at the same time their bike gets broken?
no phone is comparable to the quality, speed or practility of any garmin, wahoo, or whatever brand you use.

  5. I have had quadlock for ages but want a bike computer. Why? Because I have drowned one phone whilst on the quadlock (in the pointless poncho)and my current phone spends half the year in a bag in my back pocket! They just aren’t waterproof enough

  6. I dont see a point of using a cycling computer as I already have a phone which anyway I always bring with me. I have cycled around 60k in last 3 years as I bikepacked and always used just my phone! One more device to charge is just not fitting in when bikepack

  7. I would prefer using my phone but I have 2 main problems.

    1) Hot summer days where I live can make my phone do a thermal safety shutdown mid-ride.

    2) I haven't found a good free app that accumulates data from multiple rides.

So, I plan to get a bike computer.

  8. I have always used a Quadlock stem mount on my road bike (also on my motorbike and electric scooter).
But i use a Karoo 2 as my bike computer.
I just HATE to have my phone in my back pockets and it can be very handy to use my phone with Google Maps to get somewhere not planned on my rides (shops for fueling, water fountains etc…), also when you are simply lost…

  9. I would like to add an additional comment. I currently use the Quad Lock mount on my motorcycle, and I use it with a 'Vibration Damper' from Quad Lock. I use this to prevent damage to the phones camera. So if you're using this mount on your bicycle I would suggest getting the vibration mount as well. The bicycle is subject to just as much vibration as a motorcycle, maybe more.

  10. quadlock needs to fix their finger ring. there's a straight bit inside the ring for their branding, it's fine until you try to use the phone in bed. it becomes a finger guillotine. I complained to them about it years ago, they said they would fix it but they haven't.

  11. I have ridden with. Quad lock on my gravel bikes and garmin on my road bikes for ages. When needing a small device with metrics for road biking it is hard to beat a garmin – especially since no apps for iPhone can really compete (wanted to not upgrade my garmin at a time so tried most of them). On the other hand, Komoot on a phone is superior to garmin if your primary reason is to navigate (although navigating in rain is easily disrupted by rain drops – never had any problems with my phone not working though). So my setup is probably going to stay unless I attend some serious gravel racing where my garmin is preferred – although I might try going all phone in case some better apps hit the market).

  12. Because my garmin lasts me about 4 trips. My phone? About half. Having said that: phone is better for me in cities, using Organic Maps in offline mode (which is superior to google maps, at least in my city of choice, amsterdam), so i have a quad lock mount, and i bought a garmin adapter for it on etsy. This way, i only have 1 mount on the bike and i can switch devices depending on where i go.

  13. Just bought one for my Road bike if it passes “my testing” will pick one up for the Gravel ride. So far NO concerns same Quad lock quality we are use to. Such a reliable company! 😊

  14. Myself and 2 friends all use quad lock mounts on our bikes, and they are excellent. Easy to install. Easy to put the phone on & off. The phone feels 100% secure.

I even added a small attachment for my GoPro.

I tend to ride gravel bikes these days for anyone wondering.
