Ahead of the new Government’s first International Investment Summit, business leader, philanthropist and Phones 4U founder John Caudwell shared his views on the highs and lows of Labour’s first 100 days in office with Lewis Goodall on LBC.
After a lifetime of voting Conservative, and donating £500,000 to the Tories at the 2019 election, Caudwell publicly backed Labour at this year’s General Election.
Is Caudwell satisfied so far?
He replied: “I’ve not seen anything that discourages me. The two big issues of the day are – fundamentally, globally – climate change, which Labour are determined to help with, and the wealth of the nation and growing Britain’s GDP per capita so that public services can be improved dramatically.
“I think they utterly committed to that.” But now that we’ve seen the “verbal commitment and philosophy of doing that… let’s see the actions and whether the actions are the right actions to achieve those objectives.”
Caudwell also explained why he doesn’t like the Government’s new workers’ rights reforms but isn’t too worried about that or rumoured National Insurance and capital gains tax rises, and why – despite the cycling attractions – he has no interest in moving full-time to Monaco. In fact, he disclosed, “only the other day I was with some friends who are moving back from Monaco”.
