I disassembled a Chris King NoThreadset to clean it and I didn't pay attention to the orientation of the preload assembly and I cant figure out how to put it back together. I've never worked with this type of headset before. What is the correct orientation of these pieces? Google hasn't helped. I'm assuming this is for a carbon steer tube?

    1. I’ve looked through every single spec sheet/manual for headsets on the Chris King website and I did not find any diagrams or pictures of this specific preload assembly which makes me think it’s not a Chris King product? I don’t know, I’m super confused.

    2. Shouldn’t there be a black rubber circle that wraps around the split collar?

It doesn’t seem like there is a lot of surface area for that preload. Are you confident that when you assemble it it will be where the stem needs it to be?

If it is 1 to 4, left to right it is going to be 3 below 4, then 2 and 1. Part 3 will be the opposite way up than it is in this image. So that when it moves up it expands part 4.

But you do need that rubber part. It might not be a bad idea to buy a new one that covers more space.

expander plug, yes. not a ck part, may have come with the fork but not necessarily. the order from bottom to top would be wedge (smaller diameter up), collar/expander ring (you’ll have to choose correct orientation), washer, spring, with the bolt threading through the top cap and spring to the wedge

if it was me I would probably just replace with a more conventional and longer deda style expander plug though
