Hello everyone !! I was wondering if anyone knew anything or had advice about how to get into bike races and events. I’m only 15 but I am an avid cyclist. My rides are usually around 40 miles and I love riding.. CA

    1. You can join USA cycling and start doing road races or criterums as a junior. What part of ca are you in? There are often free local cycling groups you can practice your fast group riding skills.

    2. Ask at the bike shop.

A local club would be the place to start.

Bicycle racing is far more than just going fast on a bicycle, you’ll need to gain experience riding in a group for not only your safety, but for those around you.

The exceptions are time trials and triathlons, but for those you’ll need to get a degree in dentistry first.

    3. Start by hitting all the group rides in the area to find your speed and your people. If you find you like going fast in a crowd then look for the local races.

15 … Oh well then you still have a shot 🙂 But first talk to your parents not the Internet. Google nearby sports clubs that offer training. That is the real way. If you want to test skills join local hobby riding group, but again talk to your parents first. The races that adult riders can do at older age are not the same as for young people that want to start training the sport.

In SoCal there are group rides every day. Contact USA Cycling and they can help you out. Also your local bike shop will be a great resource.

      1) Find race.
      2) Register for race.
      3) Suffer like you have never suffered before.
      4) Train better.
      5) Repeat.

Seriously, though, you’ll likely get spit out the back early in the process so look up local races and focus on getting yourself better, not how you compare to anyone else.

    7. Get the Strava app. I got it to record my rides and progress but you can also join groups. And some of these groups are events organizers for races, triathlons, etc. I don’t feel ready to compete, I’m a newbie. But I was invited to join the nearest triathlon group that’s having a race soon in case I wanted to list myself. So I think you can have a pretty good chance of connecting through the app. Best of luck!
