The UK population has seen its largest annual increase in size since comparable data began in the early 1970s, new figures suggest.

Net international migration was the main contributor to the jump, while deaths outnumbered births for the first time – outside the Covid-19 pandemic – in nearly five decades.

The population is estimated to have risen by 1.0% in the year to June 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Talk’s Mike Graham discusses the story with independent statistician Jamie Jenkins.

    1. It’s got to the point where mass demonstrations are now needed or take a leaf out of Just Stop Oil’s book and take direct action. Our children are doomed! The Government is NOT listening!!!

    2. 10years ago Sainsburys, Tesco, ASDA ( if memory serves me correctly) held footfall surveys so they could plan their stores/distribution etc and estimated the UK population at around 80 MILLION…… and that was over 10 years ago

    3. It's sickening the betrayal of successive governments in favour of migrants who are a threat to our people and migrants who hate our country and we who have been betrayed have to pay for it

    4. No wonder we have f'king crumbling infrastructure with ECHR: pot holes, sewage pollution, housing, schools, hospitals, GPs, Dentists, food banks, homeless brits ……….

    5. I am to old to leave but my daughter and her partner are not I don't want them to go as my grand children will go as well but there is no future here for them 😢

    6. Mass Immigration causes wage and productivity stagnation whilst exacerbating the housing EMERGENCY and driving overcrowding and lowering housing standards. The Law of Supply and Demand is valid for housing and labour supply alike.

    7. A really bad aspect of all of this is how British people (including myself) are so apathetic towards voting (15-20%) due to the utter betrayal of the country by politicians in the last 25-30 years, it makes us not want to vote as nothing changes and just gets worse….meanwhile foreign culture folk have a high turnout 60%+ average (I see this where I live in the developing world) as they actually saw benefits to voting much like our boomer generation who voted on mass for low taxes and good pensions. The boomers votes have protected the wider population but as that generation comes to an end the acceleration of minorities in parliament (5 Muslims elected this term) will increase substantially and continue. Brits must start to vote – personally I'd like to see mandatory voting (yeah I hate the idea), I think its the only way we can stop Britain becoming a third world county.

    8. What a group of countries we have become post war…all was established to be self sufficient, power, manufacturing/industry, fishing, farming, a functioning NHS, and healthcare section and fit for purpose councils, government, police, judiciary, and housing stock, roads that were well maintained. Fast forward no industry, no fishing, no housing stock, roads pot holed, police and judiciary a joke, NHS ambulance, and healthcare a shadow of what it was…and non functioning government depts like CPS, Home Office, Border force etc. 😢🙏🤦‍♂️😡😡

    9. The only logical conclusion I can draw from this is that the Government (or perhaps WEF, more precisely), is actively seeking to collapse the state frastructure. But to what end? Why else would they be doing this? – Possibly just to suppress wages in the short term but that would be undone by the UK becoming a failed state in the medium or long term. It's almost as though there is another element to this that people are missing, which could be, hypothetically, that individuals are attempting to cause c*v*l war by means of infinity immigrants and profit from it. A situation like this does not arise by accident.

    10. Amazing how the media pick up on something that has been going on since the 1991 census.
All population growth in the UK is due to immigration and has been for over 33 years, and our politicians like it that way.

    11. Starmer is complicit and must be ousted ! We need a prime minister not a lawyer In a posh suit that another man paid for ! And who is not biased and an anglophobe , enough is enough
