I have been looking for a used bike on Facebook marketplace. I found 4 Specialized hardrock bikes that piqued my interest but not sure what to choose. I would be using this bike for commute and recreational purposes.
- Vintage 1996 Specialized HardRock Ultra ($325)
- Specialized Hardrock Shimano Altus ($350)
- Not sure which one this is ($500)
- Specialized Hardrock Comp ($350)
I am leaning towards the second one but would like some input. Which are the best options here?

I might end up being a lone voice, but here I go anyway…
That first one (1996 vintage) will ride sooooo much better than any of the others. Assuming you’re not off-roading you really won’t miss the suspension fork, and the ride quality of a steel mountain bike is leagues better than any cheap aluminium thing. Plus it looks dope as hell. The only thing which might catch you out here is sizing. How tall are you? The ‘96 Ultra looks about a size smaller than the other three.
N.B. Expect the brakes to be absolute arse, but everything g else will be lovely.
