Le Serpent d’ocean is one of the most dramatic and mysterious art installations in the world. Sitting just off the shore of the Loire estuary close to Nantes, France, this serpent is captivating and alluring.
As it rises out of the water, tourists from all around take pictures of themselves with the massive skeletal serpent in the background. The detail and time that has gone into this art piece is incredible.
It looks like an archaeological discovery made from millions of years ago. Except that it was sculpted by the hands of an eccentric French-Chinese artist. Finished in 2012, Serpent d’ocean is 425 feet long and is a part of the permanent public art collection of Estuaire.
Who Created The Giant Serpent Sculpture?

Huang Yong Ping is the artist and creator of le Serpent d’ocean. As a prominent figure in the Chinese avante-garde movement, he actually had many of his works banned by the Chinese government. He moved to France in 1989, and often addresses identity and mixing cultures in his work.
The serpent, for example, is prominent in Chinese mythology, which he’s brought to Europe through this unique and astonishing sculpture.
