I have slightly narrower tires on it now and a stem bag and yes I know the stem is high (no taller than a Nitto Technomic.) It's steel and is below minimum insert. I have back issues stemming from football and wrestling injuries that I perpetually working through. I love this bike and it is a mile eater!
