  1. Ollie pick up on the “bits” quote but leaves the: “There is nothing worse than getting 100miles into a ride and your box starts flapping into your knees and you get chaffeage.” 🤨

  2. If you are using a varia and have the app running, the alarm will sound long before you would have heard the car coming. If there is wind noise going on, you will be better off with the headphones because you will be more likely to hear the varia alert.

  3. I agree that I use my iphone earphones only when cycling in very remote areas, but only yesterday I was again researching small bluetooth speakers and found that battery is an issue in that they take 3 hours to charge and have only 3 hours of play time, when I normal endurance ride/trip for me would be six or seven hours each day.

BTW I can hear traffic through normal headphones but cannot hear the voices of pedestrians and very often I use my ears as an extra or only pair of 'eyes' at a quiet junction where I choose not to completely stop but listen for an approach car I might not see.

What I would like to have on my phone is a music player setting that plays the music mono rather than stereo, so exactly the same mono comes through both earphone. I could then listen to the music with just one of the two earphones like in the old days, and use the other ear to listen for traffic and pedestrians.

  4. Always wear mitts! I had so many crashes riding BMX as a kid, then riding MTB later due to not wearing gloves cos my hands slipped off the grips. I started wearing gloves and it's never happened since, sure I've crashed but not due to hands slipping. I couldn't imagine riding the road bike down a big hill at speed with sweaty hands, my mates do but I stick with my gloves. The added bonus is not having shredded hands after a crash. Then there's the comfort issue, that's questionable cos some gloves have given me blisters.

  5. **been on swift 7 years. Not quite as long as Oli but quite a long time. £5.99 then! £17.99 now! There have been lots of changes but at the end of the day you're still pedalling a bike in a room! How many riders who use Zwift actually look at the screen? I bet the majority watch YouTube, TV or listen to something.

  6. Handlebars. I get numb hands after only riding for 15min and haven't found the source for the problem yet, but I think it is the rotational position of my wrists. I will try out drop handle bars and TT bars at some point in the future and hope they help.

  7. 1:30 I don't quite understand how hearing is necessary while riding. I always use headphones when I ride. Never was I in a situation where a car surprised me, nor do I remeber ever getting into a dangerous situation because of it. I don't even know how that should make sense?
If you always drive as far to the side as you can and always look around when turning or switching lanes, you are always aware of your surroundings when it matters.
At the side of the road, if a car comes up to you dangerously close, you will have no benefit in hearing it coming, since you can't move further to the side anyway, and in every other situation vision is key.
I ride my bikes almost every day, I commute on it and I ride 10h of road every week (from April to September at least). I only ride without headphones on group rides.
I really don't understand how this is supposed to be more dangerous but I'm open to new perspectives.

  8. Well, if there is no risk of crashing in training, why wear a helmet?
Another benefit:Mitts absorb the sweat from the hands, and your handlebar tape doesn’t get caked in salt.

  9. Hot weather and insufficient hydration. Being able drink a soda with plenty of sugar in the middle of rides. I'm 80 and over the last year I have started losing endurance but I have put in 3500 miles this year so far. Now if the rain holds off.

  10. my handlebar grips always degrade and become sticky and gross. I don't know what causes it but new grips have about a 2 month life before they start getting sticky. Gloves/mitts are a must.

  11. Oi, Bridgewood! The Inner Pedant sitting on my shoulder is forcing me to point out that you are confusing acronyms with nominative determinism! Unfortunately I'm personally too dull-witted to dream up a witty acronym to sign off with. Which is why I failed my interview for the position of Acronym Research & Selection Executive.

  12. Hey i realy like the idea of investing in a better saddle. The problem i have is where do you go to try them out? Cause there are hundreds of choices but i don't really know where i van try any out. And yeah you may be Lucky and the first one you try is great. But what of it's only saddle 27 that fits?

  13. How do you find the right/perfect saddle? It's all very well having a bike fit that includes the option to try a few but you're unlikely to be able to try them for extended periods &, in my experience, people that provide bike fits have & promote their favoured brands. It could be the project of a lifetime!

  14. I prefer the Bose Open Earbuds over bone conducting earphones. They offer the same feature of leaving your ears open to hear the surroundings but avoid the bow around your neck and, most importantly, offer significantly better audio quality (bone conduction lacks bass and brilliance, the Bose sound fantastic). Only downside is they are easier to lose. Although, dropping one happened to me for the first time today, after almost a year without problems.

  15. Anything by anger is worthwhile,I’ve been using their stuff for years and they’re excellent. I do agree about headphones too, I’m a mountain biker and I refuse to use them, they throw your balance off.

  16. I wear mitts because I can use my hands to clean my tires and prevent flats. I use aero bars for endurance rides to give me another hand position on the bike. Connor nickname should be Jolly Green Giant.

  17. Powerbank that uses mag-charge as opposed to cable is more reliable in wet weather. USB-C charing port gets swamped in the rain and phone wont charge with cable, especially if phone is mounted on Quadlock on bars / stem during a wet ride.

  18. Always being your own supply of electrolytes. Sometimes your options might not be palatable and if you don't top up, cramps can ruin the rest of the day.
