Friday I was riding home from work when some dude decided to cut across 3 lanes of traffic and cut off a bus right in front of me with no warning. I was on a pretty steep downhill, thought I had a clear line and was bombing about as fast as I could go. Just picked it up from LBS who confirmed it’s unsafe to ride.

Luckily I kind of saw this guy out of the corner of my eye and was able to do a combo of skidding, dismounting and running up the curb to avoid getting truly “hit” however during this process my two week old Izumi chain hopped off the rear sprocket, got tangled, broke, got caught in my wheel, ripped 2 spokes out of the hub (which the hub, rim and rear sprocket), the chain then proceeded to whip around my chainstay and crack that as well it also caused some minor damage to my chainring.

Super annoyed as I was just about to have my frame powder coated and have new rims fit to my hubs. I finally felt like build was almost fully done and now I’m back to square one. I had planned out pretty much the whole thing from start to finish and now it’s gone. Able to salvage my cranks/pedals, seat/seatpost, fork and cockpit so I’m not starting from 0 but just very sad. That bike was my main form of exercise, fun, commuting, transit etc. in its dying moments my chain also whipped/cut the fuck out of my calf.

I am wondering if my chainring is still rideable? I think so but it’s a got some minor damage to some teeth and I would rather play it safe and get a new one if I need to.

Also anyone in the Bay Area is selling a quality steel frameset size 54-56 ~400-600 bucks let me know. Also willing to do trades for things like: IT equipment, designer clothes, software/it work.

    1. It ruined the hub, rim, rear sprocket* I can’t type and it won’t let me edit this stupid post. Whatever

    2. End of a saga, still hope you take my suggestion of prismatic cosmos or a similar powder when you get your new frame. I’d also look into Columbia and their color shifts since you’ve got some time.

    3. Catnip-Deluxe on

Check out Track Lab SF if you haven’t already. I’ve bought and sold with Patrick multiple time, always a good experience. Have fun trekking into the TL though, that’s the only downside.

    4. Yes i think you can still use the chainring. It’s just scratches, as long as there’s no crack between those teeth, i think you’re good. Sorry for what happened to your bike tho.

    5. Sorry to hear chief 🫡 in a similar boat. On the bright side, I’ve seen a lot of nice bikes going up for sale recently. I don’t have the cash at the moment but I have faith I’ll be riding a bike I love soon enough.
