Hey everyone I just built up this Specialized Hard Rock and it’s my first time building up a bike with gears.

I just put on a new 9 speed cassette, rear derailleur and chain. This noise doesn’t happen on the stand, I adjusted my limiter screws so that the chain runs through the gear properly.

This noise only happens when I’m on the bike riding it, any ideas? I can also feel a sort grinding mechanical feeling? Haha don’t know how else to describe it Sounds like the chain slipping or something, thank you

Can someone identify what’s causing this sound?

    1. Sounds like the chain is slipping on something, probably one of the front chainrings, if you replaced everthing else and are using the old chainrings, good chance those are worn out and slipping the chain under load. Also Make sure you routed the chain correctly through the rear derailleur just in case. Id bet its the front chainring. Change gears in the front, usually the largest or middle ring are used the most, test it in the smallest up front and see if it still slips
