This week a BMW SUV close passed me dangerously and illegally at less than 50cm, bending my horizontal 'courtesy distance' flag forwards. Here are some screenshots from my body cams and pics of the courtesy flag.

I like the stick idea, but wouldn’t it be a hazard if that flag got caught on a car as it drove off

    2. Man, every time someone close passes me I dream of doing this with a pole that happens to have a nice sharp end to it. But in the US you never know who’s carrying a gun and will literally murder you. Also just the threat of them *really* trying to run you over if you damage their car. You’ve got some balls. Keep it up and please keep posting!

As a fellow bike commuter, I think that pole is silly. If someone wanted to pass you on a bike or anything , seems dangerous for everyone.

That pole looks longer than 1.7 feet long.

The lane is approximately 9 feet across, so I don’t see how a car passing in the other lane would be within 1.7 feet of you.

The other driver was almost completely on the other lane. Not sure how he could give you much more space.

    6. two thoughts:

      – passing sticks don’t work that well and are not without their own dangers.

      – have a look at the grill of that car for 3 seconds and then make an educated guess who’s driving it.

      be safe out there.

    7. Okay. If you’re this uncomfortable riding in traffic (which is fair!) please stop doing it. You’re putting everyone at risk here, least of all drivers. Commuting isn’t for you but weekend rides may be, where you can be more comfortable
