Just swapped the stock (second pic) 100mm tall x 120mm long quill stem for a 205mm tall x 40mm stem (first pic). The difference in comfort is tremendous since I’m not nearly as stretched out. I think it will also put me in a better position to swap to drop bars.
Speaking of which- does anybody know if Shimano TOURNEY DUAL CONTROL LEVER 3X7s (3rd pic) are compatible with 3×7 alvio? I figured this would be the easiest way to convert to drops.

If you put drop bars on now you are effectively undoing the stem shortening.
The rear derailleur will work with the Shimano Tourney 3×7, but the front derailleur will have a different pull.
The pull ratio for Shimano rear derailleurs is the same up to 9 speed. You’ll probably have some issues with the front derailleur, so I’d suggest getting a road style front derailleur. The Tourney ones work fine for a low price.

Quick question – is Tourney all you can afford? Microshift R7 3×7 Shimano brifters are still available and the quality is a lot better than Tourney, but they cost like $100.
