  1. Training is everything, Awareness, situational stability, with zero threat there is no reason to stop re-assessing, call medics and re-inforcement(relevant to threat), communicate with the person? at any point? Video is too short but I like what they are teaching

  2. Better Explained In Classroom But It Is Different When Confronted By A Situation Whereby A Cop Do Not Have The Luxury Of A Nuanced Analysis.

  3. If he's sitting, distressed and doing nothing, then you approach him. You talk to him. Non-threateningly. You don't want to escalate the situation.

I guarantee that 90% of the time, a distressed person passivly holding a knife either wants to hurt themselves – at which point they need to be talked down and offered help – or regrets (or is having second thoughts about) doing something – at which point a skilled mediator can get them to go quietly, without gathering more trouble for themselves.

  4. If you are going to wait until an armed and threatening person starts hurting himself or others to physically intervene, then people are going to get hurt.
You are not protecting a person from violence if you wait for violence to be inflicted upon them before preventing it.
