Well harry Metcalfe has a used one so if that turns out to be rubbish he will tell the world and that will be the end of Mclaren automotive which none of us want but we can all see coming. However if it survives life with harry and his many road trips it will give the second hand market of Mclaren an absolute lifeline. I don't know of any company supercar or otherwise who brought out so many different models in such a short space of time and I would love to meet the person who told them this was a good idea and why was it allowed to go on so long even in more recent years 720,750,765LT , madness!
McLaren need to sell new cars to survive. The comments on this video about second hand bargains and how independent specialists can make them more reliable might be true but miss the point. The company needs an overhaul, and by someone with deep pockets. It is haemorrhaging cash and it won't be here soon without a lot of work.
All English cars have been shit since the inception of car manufacturing..
Conclusion. The British cannot, and should not, build cars. Not ever.
Sounds just like Alan Whicker
I think Bruce had a stab at a road car back in the day. Check out the film.
With this rep I don’t know who would by one ?
There is a theory about maclaren, when the f1 team is winning the road car division is rubbish, when they are losing, the cars are fantastic.
McLaren is a company of swots who do not realise that the job is only done when the customer places their second order.
Maybe a race engineer focused experience isn’t compatible with the buyer who wants a GT Porsche , Lamborghini or Ferrari.
A cultural problem.
Unfocused and unpredictable will be ultimately lead to their demise unless they change…
A sensible and perhaps frustrating couple of videos, your options align well with what we really want from McLaren .
We want them to succeed.
Umm….have you seen their F1 team this year? You really think strategy (business or racing) is their forte?
Is the similarity of your end titles to the Krypton Factor intentional?
Let's hope this trend of rich people don't buy these boring 6 banger hybrids. Or the 4cyn hybrids as well.
I hope these companies are loosing money 💰
That annual 'bygones be bygones' email ain't going to go that well this year!!! Great vid, as ever
I'm more than halfway through Kyle Fortune's excellent if slightly starry-eyed book on the McLaren road cars and there's this really awkward point in the book where you can just see it all go off the rails for McLaren. I've also been on their mailing list for years… and every time they've announced a new car I've looked at it, gulped, winced and thought 'oh wow… really?'. After the 720s I think they just fell of an absolute design cliff. The Artura, the GT, the Elva (wtf?), the Speedtail (yuk)… they have NO IDEA what they are trying to do. So no, I don't think you are wrong – and that's just from a design point of view. As for the business point of view, well… it's just so sad hearing your story. (btw, you're a journalist and it's 100% your fucking job to tell the truth as it is – and thankyou for doing so.)
I think that the problem is that McLaren Automotive started as an egineering company, full of F1-trained race engineers who basically did a very successful (all things told) job of transferring that racing tech and pedigree into a road-going supercar. Of course it didn't look perfect, or sound perfect, or have the nicest interior or a working infotainment system for that matter. McLaren had no history of such things – they won races and set world records. They were engineers, and the best at that. Ferrari have had decades to both engineer great sports cars AND learn the car business and understand the aesthetics and passions – the human element – of the market they were selling to. McLaren still have to learn that. Yes, maybe these cars (when they work) deliver a genuine 'ultimate driving experience' in performance terms, but the more human element (not to mention the market/business side of things) they still have to figure out…. hopefully before it's too late.
Btw, I think the reason things 'fell off a cliff' is because all the engineering in the world can only take you so far, and they got there. After that, more PS and more steering and braking feel rapidly become esoteric perks for track junkies. Meanwhile, the experience of McLaren still needed urgent attention, and it seems McLaren have not figured that out at all. Who do they get in to fix this? I am a loyal McLaren fan, like everyone here probably, but omg it's been a long time since they made a car I actually would like to drive or own. I think that's the 600LT, honestly. A 570GT would be nice too and I wouldn't say no to 650S Le Mans (the limited edition that Peter Stevens worked on) but that's it. So anyway… here's hoping the newly announced W car will be worth the wait… I'm not optimistic though 🙁
I have a Gt. Has small flows. Greatest car I ever had. Tbh I really think they recently did what you suggested. In fact they improoved the 720 and gt with 750 and gts. Dont absolutly think that ferrari or lambo have different problems. These are not daily. They are not. 911. Wanna use a gt 3rs as daily? Good Luck.
Great Photography! Love it. New cameras?
Sorry that was so tedious to watch
Its also the fact Mclaren just build the same car. Mid engine, two seat, carbon tubbed, powered by some variation of the same engine.
Well that was very informative, but now all I want to do is take my 540c ( with Larini exhaust ) for a drive through the hills ❤ it’s an unmatched driving experience and my experience with other brands is extensive, thanks Jay
Well No. I would say you are spot on with your comments. Image is great, If it works.
This video shoes if you listen to the comments instead of walking your path you will end up with a mess. I hope mclaren doesn't listen to comments and end up the same way.
I never really understood why, but the 540 and 570 range over here in Australia are basically the same price (second hand) as the 650s. There is only one 540 advertised at the moment and it’s just 5 grand cheaper than a much flasher looking 650s. So weird.
Why is a carbon fiber driver cell better than an aluminum one? I mean GT3 cars with far better pedigree such than McLaren, such as Ferrari and Porsche don't bother with that stuff. Companies will do anything they can to differentiate themselves from others in order to attract potential buyers. In making their MonoCage a mainstay in the lineup McLaren had to sacrifice somewhere else and in the end these sacrifices appear to be larger than the gains of this decision.
I have had numerous caymans, 991.2 GT3RS, now own a 992 GT3 and 2020 600LT. All were/are heavily tracked, I am way faster around the track in the 600LT than any Porsche product I’ve owned including the 992 GT3. As for reliability and running costs, I’ve had my fair share of problems with Porsche, but the problem is, whenever my McLaren has a problem it’s way more expensive to fix for not as quality of a product. What was recently really annoying about my 600LT is I’ve had a faulty battery and it was almost $6K to replace because of the IBS module that’s built into the battery…. And although the battery held a charge, the IBS malfunctioned. Since that is connected to the battery it wasn’t covered under the McLaren ESC warranty… otherwise the 600LT is faultless on track and off.
I am fortunate enough to have a few cars and having listened to the bad reviews dismissed Mc Laren. I bought a 720s with 3000 miles in 2020. A year old car that had depreciated by 40%. I’ve taken it around Europe and travelled 22,000 miles in it. It’s never let me down however a spring broke whilst abroad, the suspension needle a rebuild with a common fault. Bits have fallen off such as the door handle and the windows sometimes are a law unto themselves whilst locking however I absolutely enjoy every minute behind the wheel and the incredible performance more than compensates for any shortcomings.I bought a new 992 turbo S which has had more problems and it takes two months to book an appointment in service. As your daily, probably not,as a consideration at current price levels absolutely. I would recommend. Great content Mr Jayemm.
McLaren didn't just drop the ball; it dropped the party, the soirée, the carnival and the stag-do, too.😞
(Dear YouTube pedants: yes, I know the 'drop the ball" expression refers to ⚽🏉🏐s and fumbling catches, but I thought it'd be more appropriate with McLaren to get things muddled up and to make a bit more of a song and dance about it. I'll also be sending each of you a bill for £22,151.89 for reading this Comment. It's what McLaren would have wanted.)
I want McLaren to do so well, both in F1 and commercially with their road cars. Come on McLaren get your act together.
Your comment about people not wanting one resonates with me. I see one and love the shape, I love the potential numbers they are capable of and yet if anyone asks me one brand of sports or supercar I wouldn't own it's McLaren.
…. And I own a Maserati 😅
I mean Mclarens are just gorgeous in my eye, I love the design and company history in racing, etc… but I think the designs are top notch. However….. I too know Mclaren owners and when I was looking for my next car, I went back to a boring 911 turbo s. I'm certainly not idle rich enough to have people shuttling my mclaren back and forth to the dealership. But they do catch my eye everytime I see one….. first world problems!
All that negative press! I did look at a mac but hearing about all the brand's problems, I rejected it(a 570gt) then the "supercar" thing hit me- didn't like an Audi r8 or v10, a lambo was a no no, (cost, and I didnt have a hairy chest!) A Porsche 911t was a probable, but seeing a Ferrari California in Blanco with a red interior, did it for me! So far, three thousand miles + later, I LOVE it- no problems at All, goes like a scalded cat, looks fab, and every time I drive it, it gives me an orgasm!! So now I'm hooked on this supercar thing. Next will be a a portofino or, maybe a 458/488- might be more expensive yes, but less of a worry than a BIG Mac…we will see!
McLarens may not have the emotive soundtrack of the Italians but at least they sound better than the Mustang, which must have the flattest-sounding V8 in the industry.
I don't see it as McLaren bashing, these things have to be made known – in the long run it will help McLaren
I had a work colleague who worked for Mclaran cars who now works for the formula 1 team and he said pretty much what you said in your video !
26:34 That may not be how to sell cars, but I respect the hell out of whoever at that dealer was that honest about the product they were selling.
When Bruce McLaren Lost His Life at Goodwood in 1970,
McLaren Cars Lost its Soul.
McLaren really needs to sit down with JayEmm and talk things through.
At track… see Porsche GT2 RS hammering all day… brand new McLaren 720S broken after 2 laps… 🤷♂️
I remember one of the first 12c's I ever saw in the bdrc parking at Silverstone. The rear light cluster had moisture in it. And i thought "How the hell did Ron Dennis let this happen!". Little did i know of the shocking build quality this company has (had?).
You know it’s going to be a good video when James is sat in a McLaren with a slightly perplexed expression on his face. 😂
Great video by the way – loved the detail and depth of the piece – excellent summary apart from not stating how revered and how stunning the 458 was when it was launched. Nothing compared to it plus its design was out of this world . Against that backdrop the MC 12 4C was launched with the stated goal of beating it – you couldn’t have a bigger task if you tried.
I would like to say for those who say that James is able to buy a McLaren if he decided to. He’s far too modest to say so himself so I’ll do it for him !
I would never buy a McLaren. The designs are generic and transformer-like. The interiors have absolutely no character. This brand can not compete with Ferrari.
I’ve had many Lambos and a Ferrari, always look at the Mac’s every now and then, but none of the new stuff is appealing. Don’t like at all how the Artura looks and when at the Rolex 24 in Daytona last year the hot lap cars broke down. Those of us with Lamborghini and the STO’s had a great time, the McLaren fans who had gone to all the trouble to get down to the track all got left to watch the rest of us have a great time. Was just another reminder that I shouldn’t give that company a shot any time soon. Honestly, if they had normal doors, I don’t think they would sell 25% of the cars they do now.
That brake pedal shove is linked to the servo booster draining. The pedal does not move as much with the same force. It is a minor issue on many vehicles with this requirement.
This man is brilliant The absolute best auto commentary / review show on the planet… Beautiful "wordsmithing" mixed with perfect camera angles, and awesome drive by's. –Perfection.
