Day 224. 62km (82207kms 7yrs)

Before leaving Marseille I rode back down to the Vieux Port for one last spin around the waterfront of sailboats, flower and fish stalls, and to visit the modern architecture on the northern side of the port. From here I would say goodbye to the med and head inland.

The ride was easy, just a brief and gentle climb up and out of Marseille. Passing through a rather Turkish suburb I caught the familiar sound of Quran recitation coming from a kebab shop. The route chosen for me by organic.mops was largely along bike paths, many of which were entirely separated from the road. How civilised!

Arriving to my hosts I realised I’ve forgotten how to greet people in Europe! I keep doing the Arab hand to heart gesture and I’m completely rubbish on the French cheek kiss thing. I’ve never really had the hang of it, but especially now as I’m accustomed to an impenetrable forcefield of personal space around me! I’ll get to grips with it again, I’m sure.

Together with another friend the four of us sat in the verdant garden beneath fruit trees, drinking very good wine and chatting French and English politics over pasta, cheeses, and fig crumble. I couldn’t be happier 😁
