I’m going to guess your low limit was so poorly adjusted your derailleur threw the chain over the cassette which sucked your derailleur god knows where and thereby destroyed the system.

So… I guess that proves dork discs do nothing

Weight of the spoke reflectors threw it all out of balance.

I’m gonna refence this when the dork disk defenders come out of the woodwork again…
condolences on your derailleur tho. at least the hanger separate so your frame isn’t toast.
look if you can dentify and source the correct hanger before you go out and get a new derailleur…

General wear caused your low screw to be out of adjustment, or a stretched gear cable and it’s caused your deruallia to send the chain past the low limit throwing your chain and chewing it all up. It happens, the hanger is designed to snap. Pretty shitty but it’s part of cycling life.

Derailer moving the chain to the spokes is the likely cause (as others have stated).
But.. there’s a small chance that you broke a link on the chain, that half-broken link entered the derailer, and it ripped the thing off, and the chain moved up in the chaos. [It happened to me](https://imgur.com/yFaxeVd) 20 years ago.

It happened to me once on a long tour. A link in the chain half broke and got stuck in the rear derailleur and boom. chaos.
