I met gentleman today in Goslar Germany. He's cycling for 50 days to celebrate his 50th birthday. We had a nice long chat while waiting for a train. Very nice guy and cool bike.

    1. I’d love to get in the headspace of people who go on long cycle tours on bikes that are designed for cruising or popping 2 miles down the road to the shops. Seems wild to me, still, if it makes them happy!

I’d be terrified riding that bike down an alpine descent, but then maybe he’s not doing that.

    2. Ouchies, those tires must have humongous rolling resistance, it must suck for loaded touring… Likely they are pumped for very high pressure, which kind of eliminates the purpose of fat tires, but it does look cool, “low-profile rubber” vibe.

I actually have a similar-ish diy bent, which I didn’t actually tour on yet, it is actually reasonably fast, I can average 16mph over reasonably long distances.

A version with rear road tire is full 2mph faster tho, despite not being quite finised, but not great for bad roads.

With me weighting 260-ish pounds, I’m a “loaded tourer” even in my underpants heh.

Brave man. I would personally have chosen for a bike with a back and front rack, so I would be able to put al that stuff which he has at his handlebars in one bag, and just attack it on the back or front rack.
