    Execution of Hermann Florstedt – From Psychopatic Torturer of Buchenwald to Commandant of Majdanek



    Hermann Florstedt was born on the 18th of February 1895 in Bitche, today’s France, then part of the German Empire. Florstedt became a member of the Nazi Party in March 1931 and the following month, he joined the SA. In May of the same year, however, he left the SA and joined the SS. Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came into power in January 1933.
    Three months after the Nazis came to power, Florstedt became the city council chairman in Eisleben. In July 1933, a member of the Communist Party of Germany reported that he had been tortured by Florstedt during an interrogation, causing him to faint multiple times.
    Despite these brutal actions, a personal report signed by SS-Lieutenant General Hans-Adolf Prützmann described Florstedt as “loyal, honest, cheerful, open, lively, tough, energetic, very independent, quick-witted, clear-headed, and well-educated.”
    The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland.

    The same month Florstedt became a member of the Waffen-SS, the military branch of the SS, with the rank of First Lieutenant. He was then transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp and became a block leader there.

      I don’t get it. Was he executed by the Nazis or did he go into hiding and then later re-emerge as a criminal police officer? He was obviously psychotic but then so were a lot of the SS, it was kind of a pre-requisite for camp guards. His type would now be held in a maximum security psychiatric unit for a total life sentence. We are not barbarians and neither does our liberal culture sanction state murder. Those days are over but in the context of immediate post war executions of the worst war criminals was justice rather than revenge. We take a different view now. Those cowards who took their own lives couldn’t take the responsibility of being accountable for their actions. The millions that died as a result of prejudice will never happen again. The next threat is a nuclear winter that will end our species. We will destroy ourselves and go the way of the dinosaurs. In millions of years time new species will uncover our bones and speculate about our societies. They will never guess at our diversity or freedom of thought. We will pass into obscurity to be dug up by alien cultures as artifacts from an age when we had barely got to the moon let alone explore the universe. Our achievements will go unrecognised and our development will not be recorded as anything remarkable as we will have no impressive monuments, just empty buildings if they last that long and our history will be long forgotten with the whole sorry lot condemned to the rubbish bin of failure to recognise our own self worth or sustainability

      Hang on his female partner had a baby in 1918 so what happened to her? No mention afterwards – just that he married someone shortly after and had no kids – this is confusing. And the ending is secure about what happened to him – very confusing also
