I am a bonehead. Went to remove my square taper crank today, put the park tool crank puller on WITHOUT removing the mounting bolt, and completely stripped the outer threads. I think the deeper threads are still intact because after removing the mounting bolt I used the crank puller tool successively. The only issue I'm now running into is I cannot mount the dust caps but I imagine I can fit press-on ones.

The crank is in pristine condition so I am very frustrated. I am wondering if it would be safe to continue using this crank and just be mindful of removing it in the future as to not strip the remaining threads? I'd appreciate input thanks..

You don’t really need the dust caps, just wipe that area clean after every few rides. It sounds like you can still use the puller?
