/* —– VIDEO INFORMATION —– */

Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I’m your host Paul and this video we’re breaking down Batman.

Tim Burtons 1989 classic is a film that completely changed my life. This was a movie I watched as a kid and it made me completely fall in love with Batman. From there I got obsessed with comic books and film and it led to the guy you see sat here in front of you. I’ve been wanting to break this down for a while and can’t wait to get into the movie. Throughout this we’re gonna be going through the easter eggs, hidden things you missed and the making of Trivia.

As I said on our breakdown for The Batman I’ve got pretty much all the big batman graphic novels from over the last 85 years. So come with me as we journey back in time and talk about Batman 89.

you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight (1:31:50)

Now in order to talk about this film where have to talk about where stuff was after the 1966 show. That of course got it’s own movie too but Batman Fans felt like something was missing. A comedy that was camp and comedic it was a big departure from the work in the comics. Personally I’ve always loved the 66 show and its something I grew up watching as a kid. I love how when you’re little you take it seriously cos you don’t really understand the jokes and all the characters play it straight. When you’re older you finally see it for what it is and it works brilliantly in both aspects.

However you can see why fans were desperate for something that was closer to the comics. Now as with a lot of tv shows, The Batman series was subject to ratings and viewership. After popularity waned the show was cancelled but there was still a lot of interest in the rights.

CBS wanted to produce Batman in Spaaaaace but this ended up thankfully getting mothballed.

However in 1979 the rights were purchased by two people who wanted to take the character back to his roots. This was Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan who wanted to make a dark and serious version.

  1. Here’s a fun fact Paul: When jack Nicholson's Joker asks Michael Keaton's Batman “you wouldn’t hit a man with glasses would ya?” It’s a nod to Adam’s West's 1966 Batman season 1, episode 29, Batman asked Roddy McDowell’s Bookworm character goons to remove their glasses before the fight, then tells Robin: “Remember, never hit a man with glasses” … I think I was the only guy laughing in the theater when seeing Nicholson's put on glasses, say his line and get punched in the Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie 😂 … still an all time favorite Batman movie.

  2. The chest emblem for Batman 89, which included the additional points that represented feet on the bat, was purely an artistic choice by Bob Ringwood. Nothing more.

  3. Saw it for the first time recently as an adult. I hated it. It took me three sessions to finish because I kept losing interest and doing something else. It's a bad movie held together by Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Also, what the heck is with that lady that the Joker scars on he face? It's never explained but she seriously looks like the joker jizzed on her face and then threw something like lye on the ejaculate which caused the scarring. I'm not exaggerating.

  4. This movie made me a huge Batman fan. It was 3 when I came out and I still remember seeing it in theatre's. To me still the best Batman film to date. Appreciate you for making this video.

  5. Another great review! Thanks for the honesty especially since we went through so much bs with the planned demic. I didn't fall for it and proved that a small resistance can stop whoever is in power.

  6. I think this is one of the most important comic book movies of all time. And like Superman before it showed that live action comic book movies can work. If the source material is taken seriously….
    And to think everyone hated the fact that Michael Keaton was going to play Batman. Arguably his take on Batman to find Batman to this day…. In my opinion it's a near-perfect comic book movie.

  7. Y'know, until this video I thought the whole "I'm not sure" from Bruce Wayne was just him trying to be funny. Vicki's at Wayne Manor, at one of what is sure to be several charity events by Wayne, the lone survivor of an act that rocked the city (if only at the time, in fairness)…and this renowned reporter has absolutely no idea what the guy looks like?

  8. The ironic part is that Batman 66 was very much faithful to the comics at the time. Long gone was the original " Dark Knight" of the orgins of Batman in the comics. And Batman was on the verge of being cancelled as a title book. It wasn't until the early 70s and later Neil Adams that Batman's darker, gothic roots would return and eventually lead to Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

  9. I was obsessed with this movie when it came out. Me and my mates used to collect the batman cards that came with a gum and used to fight over them. Great breakdown of one of the most influential movies in my lifetime
