I got some 700×28 Panaracer Gravelking slicks with tan sidewalls. This morning I noticed black residue on the sidewalls and went to wipe it off, only to discover that it’s excess rubber coming from the main tread of the tyre. It’s as if the tyres are “leaking” their rubber down onto the sidewall. Running a fingernail lightly along the edge of the black part above the sidewall leaves a thick residue. (Second pic)
It seems pointless to have nice tan sidewalls if they’re just going to automatically get stained black. Is this a known reality with these tyres, or is it possible these tyres are faulty? I’ve never seen this happen before.
If this is normal, how should one clean the sidewalls? I don’t want to use any chemicals that would perish the tyres. My guess is simple bike cleaner spray but would appreciate any knowledge anyone has! 🙏
