Crazy accident. Buddy's cleat broke, he slipped out and crashed. His headset cover and spacer broke. He bought the cleats at the Trek store. Think they'll cover this? Luckily he's not too hurt. Just a shoulder.

    1. Lol those things are worn the fuck out. You’re meant to change them when they wear out not just walk marathons in them and expect them to keep going. The shop should hopefully tell your buddy to do one.

    2. Would you rather be unclipped, but think you are clipped in. Or, be clipped in, but think you are unclipped?

I’m not sure which it is for me….

    3. Cletes are never the place to save money. They are so critical to every part of the mechanics of riding.

    4. I put flat pedals on my road bike but if I was going to go back to clips I would use MTB cleats like crank Brothers. They are almost as efficient as the road ones but if you get off the bike you can actually walk

    5. I’ve been riding clipless pedals since 1990 and pushed the limits on cleat wear. As soon the wear was excessive (2/3 gone), I would inspect after each ride.

My cleat did break, but I was waiting for it to happen and was ready. I didn’t crash. I never broke another one, I changed before I knew it was going to break.

The cleat shown is extremely worn, not from riding, but from walking. No need taking it back to the Trek store, it’s a Shimano cleat. I wouldn’t expect Shimano to replace brake pads, nor would I expect replacement of worn cleats.

      Replace before cleat is wornout.

    6. I bet the cleats on his other shoe look a lot less worn. Tell him not to channel Fred Flintstone when coming to stop. Apply both brakes until 100% stopped, then put a foot down.

    7. >He bought the cleats at the Trek store. Think they’ll cover this?

Do I think the Trek store will cover a break in an extremely worn-out cleat? No. I don’t think they’ll cover that.

    8. What does the other cleat look like? I’m assuming this is is shredded because when his foot slipped out it scrapped on the ground? Or, if they both look like this, then he needs to learn about keeping his cleats in better shape.

Is your buddy also gonna ask the car dealer to fix the car they crashed because they rode around on bald ass tires?

    10. The wear looks really weird on that cleat, the middle looks destroyed, but the sacrificial yellow parts are still intact.
