This is a pretty new bike, but I also consistently ride on trails that are mostly rock/pretty rough. Last night on a ride I noticed a spoke was very loose, I hand tightened it and biked home, and found a couple more that were quite loose. I did minimal adjustments with an adjustable wrench to retighten them, and then researching the issue today everything online made it sound like touching spoke tension is the last thing you want to do if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I guess the question is, at what point would you take this to the LBS to get tuned up, here’s a video of how the wheel looks. The minor wobble doesn’t bother me but I don’t want to take it out and potentially break the wheel. Thanks!

    When to true bike wheel?

    1. if you noticed a spoke or spokes very loose, then it should be re-trued and brought up to optimal tension by someone with experience. You can absolutely learn to do it yourself but you wont get as good results if you dont have a decent truing stand

if you keep riding it without it being correctly trued and tensioned you’ll end up spending more money in the long run replacing broken spokes. also you cant tell if a wheel is true by looking at the tire – you have to look at the rim and rim only – sometimes the tire isnt seated evenly and will show wobbles when the rim is true. lastly, if your wheel is out of true enough, the tire might wear on the chainstay or a part of the frame and the rubber will eat away at the metal or carbon, ruining the frame
