I have had 6 flats over the course of the summer, two with my bike just sitting in the garage/on bike rack. I went into my local shop on Saturday after noticing the rim strip folding over itself in a few spots, they seemed to think it could be a potential issue. today when addressing a different issue I saw when they changed the flat and ended up just putting new rim tape over it. could the bunched old rim strip still be a problem? Still pretty new to bike maintenance, and I have a century coming up this weekend, and would love to minimize the chance of a flat on the ride. I appreciate any advice!

    1. Strange. Your old red rimtape is probably deformed. If it wasn’t acting as a barrier between the rim holes and tube it could cause flats.

Why would they put a smaller narrower rimtape? My only guess is that it’s all they had. It’s a bodge. Not very elegant. Might work.
