Big names, class fields, best conditions until almost the end when a little rain set in: The 30th CIC ON Swiss Bike Cup 2023 has started. One person was particularly excited about the start of the season on Swiss soil: Mathias Flückiger from Madiswil BE, who has not been allowed to take part in any races since the 2022 World Cup. Shortly before the start in Gränichen, he announced on social media how much he was looking forward to his comeback on Swiss soil. And rightly so: Mathias Flückiger was warmly received by the audience and later celebrated.
Two-Men-Show with Schwarzbauer and Flückiger
The men’s race quickly turned out to be a two-man show starring German Luca Schwarzbauer (Canyon CLLTV) from Nürtingen near Stuttgart and Mathias Flückiger. The two had already met in Banyoles (Spain) at the end of February: with an advantage for Schwarzbauer (2nd), Flückiger finished sixth there – unnoticed by the public.
In Gränichen Flückiger was in the limelight again, his start had been eagerly awaited by all sides. The Swiss and the German quickly pulled away from the rest. Flückiger was constantly and stubbornly stuck to Schwarzbauer’s rear wheel, leaving the race open at all times. Up until the last lap, neither of the two was able to pull away, even when it started to rain, until Schwarzbauer made the decisive punch on a climb.
Flückiger was no longer able to follow and had to admit defeat. In their heated duel, the two left big names such as Jordan Sarrou (Team BMC), Lars Forster or Vital Albin (both Thömus Maxon), the overall winner of the Swiss Bike Cup 2022, well behind. 24-year-old Joel Roth from Gränichen from the BIXS Performance Race Team finished ninth at his home race.
However, the second place was a relief for the beaming Mathias Flückiger, at the finish he was celebrated like the winner. He can build on his motivated performance in Gränichen, in terms of his form nothing stands in the way of a brilliant comeback.
