I’m trying to understand what are taxes like when ordering a Canyon bike in Canada, I heard stories of people getting hit with significant unexpected/hidden taxes. I was just looking at an Endurace to see what it looks like after shipping and taxes and it gives me a subtotal “excluding VAT and tariffs” and then it $452.01 estimated taxes charged by UPS below it, so does that mean there would be an estimated $400+ import tax on top of the total shown? Is that pretty accurate or is there a risk once they’re gonna call me asking to pay even more duties before delivering when the time comes? That seems like an excessive cost on top of the sticker price, almost defeats the whole DTC value offered by Canyon? Seems like I could find a comparable bike by Trek or Specialized from a local shop for comparable price after all shop fees and taxes? (I was looking at the Endurace CF7 Shimano 105 non-DI2)

I’ve been looking at canyon for the value for money but if ordering one to Canada comes with $500+ in taxes they suddenly don’t seem that much cheaper than other bikes that come with all the support at the local bike shop + 2 years free tune ups like I get on my local Trek shop.

That summary doesn’t look right. I recall approximately 22% to 24% over sticker price with duties, taxes and the $99 delivery.

Use CBSA website and use their calculator to get estimated duty. Taxes should be under $200 ish but duty should be $450 or so. Very ballpark numbers but the summary looks wrong to me. I would enquire with Canyon on the chat.

    2. I didn’t pay any duties when I ordered my Ultimate 3 months ago. Only 15% sales taxes (Québec)

    3. If they try and hit you with duty you can self declare. Germany is a trade partner with Canada, there should be no duty on the bike. I didn’t pay duty on either of mine shipping into Ontario.

    4. This looks right to me. This $452 isn’t any hidden tax, this is the same as the HST you would pay on top of a sticker price if you had purchased a bike in a shop in Canada. This is 13% of the total of $3477, which matches the sales tax rate of Ontario and maybe others.

What you’re worried about are the import duties which this page is showing as zero. There seems to be some confusion here and from people I’ve spoken to that have purchased Canyons and were charged the import duty, however I did not have to pay that when I ordered.

In my opinion, even if you have to pay the import duties there is still better value with the Canyon. It may well still turn out to be a little bit cheaper, but I appreciate the upgrade in components and their geometry compared to other brands. Before I purchased my Canyon, I was comparing to the equivalent new Giant Defy. The Defy came with a lower tier crankset (not groupset), alloy bars, and an alloy seat post. Compare that to the Canyon Endurace I bought and I got the proper 105 crankset, carbon bar and stem, and carbon seat post. In my case, it still worked out to be almost $500 cheaper and with arguably better components. Even still, if I paid duties I would have not saved that $500, but would have still got the upgraded components. Just my two cents.
