I got a Smith Signal size L and it seems extremely big on me. I can get the size down so it fits my head but wondering if I got a size M, the shell size of the helmet is actually smaller or if it will look the exact same.

  1. everyone’s helmet looks huge to them, just buy a good helmet that fits you and you don’t mind the look of it. i’m partial to specialized because of my large oval shaped head.

  2. I just replaced my smith with a giro. My head looked like a mushroom in the smith helmet and I was excited to finally age it out

Seems like good forehead coverage, the only clue that you’ve given us is that it is on the smallest size setting. otherwise, it is truly impossible to tell the fit of a helmet based on a picture because only your head within the helmet can really decipher the true answer!

In terms of looks, yeah, there are more svelte profiles, but this this honestly doesn’t hit me with a whoa that’s a big looking helmet slap. All helmets after the padded leather strips “helmet” of 1979 are bulbous. Kask helmets currently are one of my top faves, but it’s all about the inside fit, forehead coverage/non slippage and how much ventilation vs aero you are going for.

Ok (I commented before seeing the second photo, which is more telling) I’m going to walk it back and say yes, yes indeed that helmet may be a size too big based on the rear over-hang/diameter. Looks like a lot of negative space in the back. Return if you can and size down or different make/model altogether

  5. Helmets look like mushrooms on everyone’s head. Especially white helmets (white anything always looks bigger than any other color. BTW I own ONLY white helmets so it’s not a jab at the color itself). It looks fine to me. I would say if it fits, it’ll be fine. Not sure if you plan on wearing proper cycling glasses but that would help the look vs. prescription glasses.
