Lachlan Morton is at it again with another ultra-endurance adventure, but could this be a warm-up for something even bigger? We’re talking a possible around-the-world record attempt! So, we catch up with the current record holder, Mark Beaumont to find out what he thinks about Lachlan’s current exploits, his potential route AND ultimately whether he thinks Lachlan’s got a chance of clinching the record!

Plus, Si & Dan compare Peter Sagan to Ollie Bridgewood (as one does), hear why Si thinks cyclists would ruin Parkrun, and wonder if Instagram really knows what the most beautiful bike rides in the world are.

    1. Yes, Lachlan could do it . However, Mark is obviously correct in there being so many variables that the outcome is impossible to predict.
Will GCN be making new documentaries to view on the premium subscription ?
I loved the originals and watched most of them . I felt quite let down when the app was cancelled.

    2. I've always thought he'd do this try the 'Round the World record since I first heard that he was thinking about it and I also suspect he's training for something bigger, because we know he was thinking about it!

And by cranking out 300-mile days every so far, bar one, it's obviously he's trying to think about whether he can sustain something beyond Mark's 240-miles a day (average).

Will be interesting to see whether he can plan around the politics because one presumes his route might have to be different to Mark's, given the situation in Russia. Meanwhile, I'm very much in awe of his Australia trip so far because a meme about Highway One in Australia popped up at me on social media about a month ago and I bothered to work out how long it would take to ride at 100-mile days, which is probably do-able for me with the odd rest day thrown in perhaps.

To think he's smashing out 300-mile days so far, is just unbelievable and totally inspiring.

    3. About Lachlan Morton and around the world time trial attempts… * Big asterisk… Or disclaimer for the future, I recently learned from experience with my wahoo…(Not sponsored add) That you can't get more than a week or perhaps 1000 km of recording to get a file (.Fit file) that can be processed and therefore be the proof that you can and you do… The effort in 'one single run' … Then if is not under 15mb of weight not komoot Strava Ride with gps among the top platforms would be able to upload your activity… Then it is up to the future and the software developers to create some useful tool / hack for us ultra distance cyclists and for the ones that follow our paths that we dream to get there around the globe, or places in 'one' go … And not having to be forced to cut the recording day by day like Morton or Lael has been doing. Is simply a matter of get control in the stopped time. To cut the filling times.

    4. GCN Discussion Topic: Event Cancellations

In recent weeks I’ve received event cancellations for Ride London – 100mile sportive and for the Richmond Duathlon (sorry…) both have highlighted concerns around the safety and speed of cyclist in closed road events as well as trouble securing long term sponsors.
Has the 2012 bubble of interest in cycling now burst? Is this related to the expense of cycling and associated insurance for companies planning events? Perceived negativity or disinterest in cycling by associations such the Royal Parks, and London borough councils, and are other sportive seeing similar restrictions?
These were both great entry level events for beginners and experienced athletes alike and it feels like a big loss to the cycling community, especially in London. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

    5. Lachlan has the unofficial FKT for the Great Divide ride, Canada boarder to Mexican boarder through the US. It didn't count because there was a film crew. He's capable of this ride and knows how to do ultra endurance rides.

    6. Can you do a deep dive into the effects of cycling on hearing? Feels like a topic no one in the media mentions but high wind noise for long periods of time must have some impact.

    7. can't help but notice the discrepancy here. you interviewed mark for 10 mins because another cyclist is rumored to attempt the world record. Lael is just about to finish her ride, why wasn't Jenny interviewed before/during Lael's attempt? also, to make a comment about 'not in the spirit' of the around the world record is disingenuous. These cyclists are out there to BREAK A RECORD, following rules set by a governing entity. If the record rules aren't in the right 'spirit', then take it up with the Guinness Records. To discount Lael or any other cyclist's attempt because of their route choices is a disgrace. GCN – you can do better.

    8. Hack/bodge: Talenti ice cream / gelato jars… you can do the same thing with wide mouth glass canning jars… pickle jars, peanut butter jars, baby food jars… my stepfather used to use them in his workshop to sort different hardware parts, same exact thing with the lids screwed to the underside of the shelf

    9. After watching the GCN Show #609 on Tuesday evening, I got up the next morning and walked up to catch the bus to work. Waiting for me on the bus stop seat was a small full packet of Haribo. The Hack/Bodge possibilities seem endless! Emergency chain lube anyone?

    10. Si wondered if brands really do have to pay factories front. I don't know about today, but when I worked for a U S.-based bike brand in the 90s, our frames were crafted and built up in Taiwan: we always paid up front.

    11. A well established bike shop here in Dublin has just closed. Two shops actually closed due to difficult trading conditions. Only a few yrs ago there were hundreds of people lined up outside bike shops during pandemic! Will more shops follow?

    12. I love all the Mark Beaumont videos and documentaries, they were a huge inspiration to me and doing my own tour around Europe because of them, im one month of three in and loving it
