This Hill climb race in Cardiff had me trying out a new pacing strategy. In this video I take you through my ride and effort as well as comparing the performance to that of the same race last year. Makes for interesting data!

A little about Ed….
Ed is an elite cyclist, 2019 British Hill Climb Champion and former Under 23 British RR Champion. He has raced as a Continental level Professional Rider for one of the most successful British cycling teams in Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada, Azerbaijan to name a few. He is also a public speaker, coach, and founded the on/offline cycling community, Backpedal. At the start of 2021, the Discord community began, and plonked many of Ed’s viewers in to a 550+ strong group of people that had many things in common. Not least wanting to explore the world and pedal their bikes faster!

Ed coaches lots of cyclists in the online community too! If you are interested, email [laverackcoaching@yahoo.com] for information on the 1-2-1 coaching package and training plans, of which there are many and flexible options to suit everyone!

Ed now prioritises having fun with my hard earned fitness and knowledge in the sport. Showcasing that maybe there is an alternative to racing for teams when you can race for yourself and your community of followers and brands. This YouTube channel is a docu-series highlighting what it’s like to be a cyclist in today’s competitive age of sport.

  1. Congratulations on the win! I find the discussion of your pacing strategies to be very interesting. I recall the RAAM legend Pete Penseyres (from the 1980s) discussing his strategy (and the math behind it) of the gains he could make in overall time by increasing his climbing speed by 1 mph over increasing his time on the flats by 1.5 or 2. Of course with your climbs being so much shorter, the differences in time saved would be less, however, I believe that they theory of making the gains where you would otherwise be slower (and accumulating more time) would outweigh the gains by going slightly faster where you are already faster (and accumulating less time). As you noted, this theory goes out the window on a perfectly steady gradient….just go harder the entire time!

  2. Cool vid Ed, I always enjoy it when you break down data. I would argue, though, that there quite clearly is right and wrong in this case. Especially if the climb is a straight forward as you describe. I think your suggestion of 430/500(ish) sounds very close to your optimal strategy. I don't know your critical watts, but I would I would be surprised if your optimal strategy is not around high z6 for 1k and mid z7 for the final k, translating to 2 mins around 430 and 500 for 2,5-3 mins. It would be really interesting to see you try out different tactics for the climb.

Oh, and don't forget to do the Pogi-Pantani-comparison climbs you spoke to the Cade-guys about. Would also be amazing content. Oh, and please consider discarding the camera, it's too Busta Rhymes for me.

    All the best, Niklas

  3. Nice effort, Ed. It was risky, but I support the experiment with pacing – you never know until you try. I suppose it could be done in training vs on race day but if it wasn't a target race for the year, doing it in race is fine as well. Separately, I can't link to the video due to comment restrictions but the guy at NorCal Cycling has a very good video on getting the best out of your insta360 camera footage by optimizing the mount location. NorCal Cyling video titled "360 cameras are finally good… but you have to mount them correctly"

  4. LOL. 2 other hill climbers have overtaken cars this year too. It's the latest trend. They were Kieran Wynne-Cattanach in one of the Macc Wheelers ones and Bhima Bowden in the Manchester Wheelers Brickworks. Don't know the circumstances behind them but that's gotta be one hell of an adrenaline rush!

  5. On my local climb i have my pb set, when doing kind of 2min/1min intervals. After many trys i can't reach that time trying to go steady from the start on. I think it is very dependent on the type of rider you are too.

  6. Fab vid as always🀘 Considered elliptical ring? Rode a mate’s 1-by elliptical and was a great feeling. Interestingly was even more pronounced when I went back to my bike it felt as though something was missing..

  7. Congrats !!
Too many moving parts and variables (Weight, weather, bike setup, fitness on race day … etc)
Just like I learned in running, and just like Phil G. said, the best way to manage effort is to split it in three thirds. The first third is slowest and the last third is the fastest or hardest.
