      I loosened the pinch-clamp bolt and removed the quick-release adapter, which I am holding in this photo. I want to remove the lockring so that I can remove the brake rotor. I have the tool to remove the lockring but I don’t think I can spin it off until the silver-colored circular thing is removed. I think that this is part of the axle?

      After I took this photo I removed the cassette but it’s still not clear to me how to remove the axle, which is what I think that I need to do before I can remove the brake rotor.

      It’s an external lock ring, see the notches on the outside of the black ring? Use a bottom bracket tool on it

    3. That’s a strange assembly, new to me… Do you have to remove that collar with a ball head allen key? Good luck, make sure you have good purchase on it so it doesn’t strip

    4. Some older Chris King hubs have this design. You have to remove the threaded preload adjustment collar as well. it’s a 2mm (or similar) sized Allen bolt that you can loosen and then unthread the collar from the axle.

      Then you’ll be able to remove the external lockring holding the rotor as other commenters have said.

      The part you loosened is the preload adjuster and it’s threaded. The small hole below the punch bolt allows you to insert tool, like a hex, and turn it, either to adjust preload or unthread it completely, so you can remove the rotor lockring.

      Update: a couple people commented with the correct answer. The silver-colored collar is the preload adjuster and can be rotated and removed. Once that was off, I was able to remove the rotor lockring.

      Just knowing the proper terminology for this stuff helps find the answer. It’s hard to know what to do when you don’t know what a part is.
