The Velodroom Veldslag om Norg is a 100km MTB race but I decided to bring my gravel bike! The performance difference between a gravel bike and a mountain bike can be small in some situations but in this case it was massive! Was it the right choice for me to take the gravel bike? Or was it just the tire pressure that screw me over….

  1. WHY I DID NOT STOP AND LET AIR OUT??

More guys asking the same question so I’m copy pasting some of the answer:

I never know beforehand how much loose sand there is. So if there is one dry section in the beginning I don’t want to stop immediately to adjust because i will lose the group instantly.
By the time you realize it maybe worth it you’re so far in the race… it may not be worth it anymore

Besides that, the difficult thing is, when you do that you have no way to measure what you’re doing and you risk to let out too much. You will not find out until you are riding again and the tires roll off in the corners 🤪
Also it will cost time, so you wouldn’t want to do it on the key moments where the difference is made and the lead group is established.

But, yes it’s definitely an option and could work out if you are lucky

If it’s not a race with a group but an individual TT or just a casual ride you can stop straight away and will be more efficient and make up the time. But in a race with a group, the benifit from riding with the group is often so big, you don’t want to lose that by stopping… same reason we don’t stop at the feed stations or stop to piss!

(Last year at Bartje200 I stopped to piss after 4 hours and I never saw the guys back!🤨)

  2. Goed gereden Jasper! Hadden jullie geen gpx route op jullie fietscomputer of geen tijd om die bij elke afslag te checken in de race?

  3. Impressive riding, especially on the single track ! I would have chosen an XC bike, since the terrain where you could take advantage of the aero-position on the gravel bike was not that great overall. Over time, your upper body will fatigue much more riding really rough sections on the gravel bike.
I do a lot of testing between gravel bike and XC bike, and results are often surprisingly close.

  4. When I was a teenager, I joined the local road race, on my heavy 1970s schwinn with swept back bars. I did pretty good, held 6th till the sprint and got passed by a flood of racers. The next year I had a fancy old road race bike, but they were steamed and led me the whole way. Hahaha
