Is the bike industry still in crisis? Last year, we spoke to an industry expert. One year on, have things gotten better or worse? Is the industry back on an upward trend, about to make a reversal, or is it still in free fall? Dan and Si find out. Plus, they discuss electronic cycling shoes, Ford e-bikes, cross-country mountain biking, and broken climbing records!

  1. Regardless of the high prices for new high end bikes everyone benefits from the trickle down effect as the newer and more functional groupsets work their way to the mid range and below. These days we are not held hostage by shops that only carry high end. Excellent lower-priced bikes are all over the net.

  2. The main issue facing the industry is that many of the bikes bought during COVID are now flooding the used market, often in near-new condition. With so many great options available at half the price, there's little incentive to purchase a new bike. Technological advancements haven't made a significant leap either. The only noticeable difference might be an extra gear or the occasional internal cable routing, but these are changes most everyday cyclists won't even notice while riding.

  3. If my recent experience of bike shops apparent unwillingness to sell, inability to give advice and utter lack of response to simple enquiries is anything to go by the industry must be very healthy. That or they’ve taken lessons from the motor trade in how to treat paying customers like dirt.

  4. A bit sad that the industry is looking at a return to 2019 sales as the recovery target. If we are building all this bike infrastructure and expect governments to maintain it, we need ridership to increase. That only happens if bikes are affordable for the target audience. We need a lot of $250-500 bikes to be sold and used or you can expect all those bike lanes to disappear.

  5. The prices have shot up drastically over the years to finance the warranty claims. Companies make the money to stay in the green and if needed to warranty something, the consumer ends up paying for it

  6. You guys are all shills… the bike industry isn’t broken when they’re selling $17,000 bikes. They don’t need to worry about the poor or the middle-class anymore. The industry sells $400,000 worth of bikes to one team on the tour and that’s not all the extras. They’re making plenty of damn money. And then you have all these rich people in New York and they can afford to put on a credit card $17,000 bike. Rim Breaks for life industry.

  7. What's the amount of stock? People are not buying because there is no model or frequently – desired size. But this should lower the price for other bikes in stock, right? There are too many bikes in colors and sizes that most new buyers don't want. And you can always order bike you need to be built for you, so will shops have a desire to have a lot more of stock when now they can. make a better margin with paying less for space?
I think they would not want to.

  8. Bikes are very expensive, especially those on sale. Plus, regarding "previous season" bikes on sale, people already saw long-term reviews on some of them and don't want to pay a lot of money for bikes that have some constructional faults, probably fixed in newer model.

  9. Bikes are expensive. Bought a really nice Cervelo in 2016 when I came into a little extra money, and it's served me well ever since. Why would I buy another any time soon?

  10. Absolute nonsense. Due to the prices people are making their kit last longer. And just like every other industry during covid they were/are profiteering. And people who buy the 10 grand bikes genuinely aren’t worried about pricing.

  11. Paying in the range of 5 to 6K USD LBS EUR for a mid 8Kg range bike and 8k and up for a top end one might have something to do with it. Pricing is just nuts!!!

  12. Nice Kit. Why is the traditional red/black color scheme being ignored for Opulant Orange? When we wear GCN kit during events, do we receive royalties for advertising for the channel? I have a 2-day event coming up at the end of the month.

  13. I miss GNC+!! OK. I have a Moots RSL from 2017. Mechanical Rim Ultegra, Mavic R-sys wheelset. $8,000, $9K with Ti stem and post. Now Moots wants $16,000 for the Ultegra Di2 disc spec'd CRD with ENVE SES 3.4 wheels. The EXACT same frame. So pay $8,000 for electronic shifting, disc brakes and internal routing on the exact same frame? That would be NO. I now have a forever bike because the industry has lost its mind.

  14. I'm not as concerned with the state of the cycling industry as I am with the State of GCN. Many presenters asking for Likes have alluded to financial challenges now that the channel is private.

  15. Why include "hacks & bodges" if neither presenter is the least bit mechanically inclined?? After countless GCN Tech vids on chain waxing, Si & Dan still can't wrap their minds around a seemingly simple practice.
